Backend Engineer

About the role

Northwest Partners is supporting a major initiative with a top-tier organization in the technology space and is looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to contribute to the success of this work. The role focuses on building and operating secure, scalable backend services, APIs, integrations, orchestration layers, and AI-enabled capabilities across enterprise data and business systems.

What YOU will do

• Design, build, test, deploy, and operate cloud-native backend services, APIs, workflows, and integration capabilities.
• Implement business logic, orchestration services, domain services, event-driven patterns, and service composition.
• Develop integrations with enterprise systems, third-party platforms, data services, pricing and underwriting capabilities, and AI services.
• Use AI coding agents and engineering copilots to accelerate development while maintaining code review, testing, security, and production quality standards.
• Create automated unit, integration, contract, regression, and performance tests throughout the delivery lifecycle.
• Contribute to API standards, reusable engineering patterns, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, and service reliability practices.
• Own production readiness, monitoring, incident response, defect remediation, and continuous improvement for delivered services.
• Collaborate with analysts and product owners to clarify requirements, technical contracts, and acceptance criteria.
• Design and maintain ontologies, taxonomies, business vocabularies, semantic models, and concept relationships across business domains.
• Develop knowledge graphs, entity relationships, metadata structures, and mappings that enable systems and AI agents to reason across business concepts.
• Engineer AI agent patterns, retrieval-augmented generation pipelines, prompt strategies, orchestration flows, evaluation frameworks, and reusable AI components.

What YOU will bring us

• Backend development experience with Java, Python, .NET, Node.js, TypeScript, or equivalent enterprise technologies.
• Experience with API-first design, microservices, service orchestration, event-driven architecture, and distributed systems.
• Experience with AWS cloud services, containers, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, secrets management, and automated deployment practices.
• Experience with contract testing, automated quality gates, performance tuning, observability, and production support.
• Ability to work effectively in an AI-assisted software delivery environment, including reviewing, hardening, testing, and operationalizing AI-generated outputs.
• Experience with generative AI, LLM application development, prompt engineering, agent orchestration, and RAG architecture.
• Experience with ontology modeling, taxonomy development, knowledge graphs, semantic technologies, and metadata design.
• Experience with Python, machine learning or AI frameworks, vector databases, semantic search engines, and data integration patterns.
• Ability to shape service architecture, reduce dependencies through strong contracts, and support self-service platform patterns.
• Strong understanding of production ownership, service reliability, security, scalability, and maintainability.
