About the role
Piper Companies is seeking a Backend Engineer to join an innovative organization in the networking and network simulation space. The Backend Engineer will play a key role in building and enhancing backend systems that power advanced network modeling and emulation environments. This position is ideal for an experienced engineer with a strong background in backend development, virtualization technologies, and networking fundamentals who enjoys solving complex infrastructure and automation challenges. This is a fully remote long-term open-ended contract opportunity.
Responsibilities
- Develop and enhance backend applications that manage virtual network environments, containers, and virtual machine infrastructure.
- Build and maintain scalable REST APIs that enable customers to create, deploy, and interact with simulated network topologies.
- Partner with engineering teams to optimize resource utilization across compute, storage, and networking layers.
- Design automation capabilities that support infrastructure-as-code testing and network validation workflows.
- Improve system scalability, reliability, and performance to support large-scale concurrent simulation workloads.
Requirements
- 5-8 years of backend software engineering experience with a focus on distributed systems or infrastructure platforms.
- Strong networking knowledge with a solid understanding of TCP/IP, Layer 2/Layer 3 switching, routing protocols, and core network architecture concepts.
- Strong programming skills in Python or Go, including experience with Linux systems programming and operating system internals.
- Hands-on experience with virtualization and containerization technologies such as QEMU, Libvirt, Docker, and/or Kubernetes.
- Experience designing, developing, and maintaining RESTful APIs.
Pay
Salary range: $115,000-$140,000 annually
