About the Role

Dr Graziella Iossa is a Back to Science Fellow at the School of Life Sciences, University of Lincoln. This fellowship allows her to conduct research part-time, fitting it around family commitments while also providing funding for training to update her skills with current research.

Background and Journey

Graziella Iossa is a zoologist with a focus on behavioural and evolutionary ecology, having used mammals and insects as study systems. Her journey into science began with a love for nature developed during childhood, leading her to pursue Natural Sciences at university. After completing her PhD, she faced challenges balancing academia with starting a family, prompting her to transition into scientific publishing.

After nearly five years away from academia, Graziella returned through the Back to Science Fellowship at the University of Lincoln. The fellowship supports her re-entry into research while accommodating her family life.

Challenges and Insights

• Initially struggled with the competitive nature of academia and the demands of securing funding while wanting to start a family.
• Transitioned to scientific publishing but found it less fulfilling over time, particularly as her role became more repetitive.
