B & M Maintenance Technician - Plumber

About the role

This regular/full-time position reports to the Lead Plumber and is responsible for maintaining and repairing plumbing and mechanical systems across City-owned facilities. Duties include installations, preventative maintenance, and minor repairs, with occasional supervision of support staff and operation of City vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public using strong customer-service skills.
• Operate City vehicles to support departmental and City business.
• Repair and maintain plumbing and mechanical equipment; identify problems and determine appropriate repair methods.
• Perform plumbing, gas, chiller, hydronic heating, and fixture repairs and installations; work from plans, blueprints, and verbal instructions.
• Inspect mechanical equipment for defects and perform preventative maintenance.
• Conduct routine maintenance on motors, electrical systems, carpentry, HVAC, boilers, and related equipment.
• Operate a variety of vehicles and motorized equipment, including backhoe, skid-steer, and forklift.
• Perform assigned custodial duties as needed.
• Attend work reliably; punctuality and regular attendance are essential.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Two years of experience in plumbing and maintenance fields.
• Valid New Mexico driver’s license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years.
• Ability to obtain New Mexico State Journeyman Plumber and Journeyman Gas Fitter (JPG) licenses within one year of hire.
• Knowledge of Uniform Plumbing and Mechanical Codes and Standards.
• Strong computer skills.

Skills

• Proficiency with common hand and power tools for maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.
• Familiarity with compressors, acetylene/oxygen welders, pneumatic calibration gauges, detection devices, and mobile communication equipment.

Physical Demands

Frequent walking, sitting, talking, and hearing. Frequent use of hands to handle objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and may move up to 75 pounds with assistance. Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, and focus adjustment.

Work Environment

Occasional exposure to outside weather, wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and electrical shock risk. Occasional work in high or precarious places. Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals such as paint, lacquer, and paint-thinner. Noise levels range from quiet to moderate, with occasional loud periods.
