About the role

The Journalism Instructor position at East Los Angeles College (ELAC) is a full-time, probationary C-basis position starting Fall 2026. This position includes a wide variety of courses within the Journalism program, with flexibility to teach at various times and locations.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a range of Journalism courses at ELAC, including day, evening, weekend, and online classes.
  • Work in a Newsroom environment, assisting in operations and managing student projects.
  • Develop and teach courses online or using other distance-learning methodologies on a learning management system.
  • Assess and evaluate student learning outcomes and utilize assessment results to improve instruction and support programs.
  • Design curricula responsive to the needs and interests of underprepared and historically underrepresented students.
  • Build partnerships across campus and institutions to enhance success for Journalism students.
  • Communicate effectively in written English and establish cooperative working relationships with colleagues and students.

Requirements

The successful candidate must hold a Master's degree in Journalism, Communication, or a related field, with a specialization in Journalism, or a Bachelor's degree in Journalism or Communication and a Master's degree in English, History, Communication, Literature, Composition, Comparative Literature, any Social Science, Business, Business Administration, Marketing, Graphics, or Photography. Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff are also required.

Qualifications

  • Master's or higher in Journalism or Communication Studies.
  • Experience with running/assisting in a Newsroom Environment.
  • Experience teaching at the community college or university level, both in-person and online.
  • Experience with developing and teaching courses online or using other distance-learning methodologies on a learning management system.
  • Experience in the development, assessment, and evaluation of student learning outcomes.
  • Experience designing and teaching curricula that incorporate best practices responsive to the needs and interest of underprepared and/or historically underrepresented students.
  • Experience cultivating and identifying lower or zero cost textbook resources for Journalism Studies courses.
  • Experience/ability to build partnerships across campus and across institutions to improve success of Journalism students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with first-generation college students using multi-modal approaches and student-centered pedagogy.
  • Clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications

Salary and Benefits

The current starting range is from $76,960 - $143,000 for the ten-month academic year, depending on education and experience. The Ph.D. differential is $4,870 per academic year. The district provides an excellent benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.
