Pay

  • $25.00 per hour for Certified Teachers
  • $20.00 per hour for individuals with a Four-Year Degree
  • $15.00 per hour for Currently Enrolled College Students
  • 2–19 hours per week

About the Role

AVID tutors guide students toward academic and personal excellence, actively participating in their learning, growth, and personal development. Tutors are key to the success of the AVID program, trained to use specific teaching methodologies to work with students in study groups and individually, assisting them in all academic areas to meet college expectations.

Tutoring in AVID is a unique role that requires extraordinary commitment and offers rewards for careers in teaching or any people-oriented profession.

Qualifications

  • Excellent role model of motivated, organized, and successful college students who believe in the potential of AVID students.
  • Currently enrolled at a college or university.
  • Balanced academic backgrounds, including liberal arts, science, or mathematics majors.
  • Ability to work supportively with secondary students and understand the advocate-teacher balance.
  • Willingness to meet regularly to discuss student progress and confer with teachers about tutorial plans.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct tutorial sessions emphasizing collaborative learning and peer teaching through discussion of class and text notes.
  • Determine key concepts for tutorial focus using student worksheets, notes, and discussions.
  • Assist students in all phases of the writing process, including brainstorming, revision, and editing.
  • Encourage students to take responsibility for their own active learning while guiding them in independent strategies.
  • Reinforce the idea that learning extends beyond studying to form the basis for long-term accomplishments.
  • Assist students in any subject area by familiarizing yourself with their textbooks, materials, and AVID classroom resources.
  • Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, and learning logs.
  • Assist in teaching study skills and other aspects of college preparation.
  • Maintain a positive tone and atmosphere in the AVID classroom.
  • Acknowledge the individuality of all AVID students and foster their academic and personal pride.
  • Assist the AVID coordinator as requested (e.g., contacting teachers, helping with field trips, contacting parents).
  • Develop a resource file of enrichment materials for tutorial sessions.
  • Communicate regularly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
  • Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students.

Working Conditions

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Regular light lifting and carrying.
  • Use of standard office and instructional equipment, including computers.
  • Moderate standing, occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping.
  • Moderate walking.
  • Work inside and outside, with exposure to noise and frequent interruptions.
