AVID Tutor

About the Role

Tutoring opportunities exist at middle and high schools. Applicants must be willing to work within a variety of content areas with small groups of students under the supervision of a certified teacher in a classroom during the regular school day. Tutors serve as guides and facilitators of students' learning through questioning, writing, thinking, and discussing.

Tutors may work a minimum of one hour per week, or multiple hours, depending on availability.

Requirements

• Active enrollment in higher education (e.g., college or university)
• Pass a background check prior to employment
• Complete AVID Tutor training with the AVID Site Coordinator
• Organizational and record-keeping skills
• Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills
• Ability to manage time and meet obligations with minimal supervision
• Commitment to maintaining confidentiality
• Caring about making a difference in the lives of students and the community

Responsibilities

• Maintain a consistent schedule throughout the semester with the school(s)
• Provide a positive and encouraging environment for students and school staff
• Maintain an accurate and honest timesheet
• Follow requirements for documenting tutor information for students
