About the role

As an Apprentice Machinist, you will perform setup, calibration, maintenance, and operation of machining equipment, including computer numerically controlled equipment, to make complex precise cuts, bends, alignments, and forms of requisite materials. Cross-train in other complementary skills as needed to support production requirements. The organization provides on-the-job training to develop internal candidates in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Perform setup, calibration, maintenance, programming, and operation on a variety of machining equipment including lathes, brakes, shears, grinders, drill presses, milling machines, computer numerically controlled, and hydraulic presses to repair parts and complex assemblies.
  • Read and interpret specification manuals, blueprints, templates, and layouts to determine machining operations to be performed.
  • Compute dimensions and tolerances and measure and lay out work pieces.
  • Verify dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, gauges, and micrometers.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and modify to achieve expected performance.
  • Adjust and set up machine tools for use by machining tool operators.
  • Participate in continuous improvement of cell processes.
  • Cross-train in other complementary skills and seek endorsements for those skills as needed to support production requirements.
  • Move between production assignments that utilize multiple skills endorsements as needed to support production requirements.
  • Participate in the cross-training of other technicians as needed to support production requirements.
  • Responsible for observing all applicable safety requirements and reporting immediately any unsafe practices/conditions.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • High degree of mechanical aptitude, accuracy, and precision.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret blueprints.
  • Strong mathematical aptitude.
  • Working knowledge of related company instructions, company processes, rework process instructions, original equipment manufacturer manuals, and MSDS labels.
  • Working knowledge of production management computer systems and other related internal control systems.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (unassisted) for approximately 25% of the average workday.
  • Regularly required to stand for prolonged periods.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in the use of precision measuring instruments and hand tools.
