About the role
This work involves the safe and efficient operation of light single axle trucks, farm-type tractors and related automotive and construction equipment. In addition to equipment operation, incumbents are required to perform manual labor.
Responsibilities
- Operates various types of single-axle trucks and related equipment
- Inspects fluid levels, cleans, and performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment operated
- Completes and submits reports of work completed
- Removes snow, spreads salt, sand, and anti-icing material and may also be required to install tire chains and snow plow blades on trucks
- Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor
- Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification
Requirements
- Knowledge of minor maintenance needed to repair and maintain assigned equipment
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation
- Ability to operate various types of single axle trucks, related construction equipment, and basic hand tools in the performance of assigned duties
- Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines
- Ability to compile reports of work completed
- Ability to learn the geography of the city
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public
Qualifications
- High school graduation or its equivalent preferred
- One (1) year of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of trucks or construction equipment of the type assigned to this classification
Special Qualifications
- Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at time of application
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class “B” or Class “A commercial driver’s license with “N” endorsement by the end of the probationary period
- Must possess and maintain a 2nd Grade Hoisting and Portable Engineer's Certificate (or higher) and a flagger certification by the end of the probationary period
- If assigned to Park Maintenance, Forestry, or Impound Lot divisions, must possess a forklift operator’s certificate by the end of the probationary period
