Overview

If you’re an automation professional who thrives on solving real-world control problems, improving system reliability, and bringing seasoned judgment to PLC and instrumentation design, this role is built for you. As an Automation Specialist III, you’ll serve as a technical subject matter expert for upstream onshore oil and gas producing operations—owning installation, programming, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of control systems across producing assets.

Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and configure PLCs, RTUs, and HMI systems for oil and gas production facilities
  • Lead control system upgrades, migrations, and obsolescence remediation projects
  • Develop and maintain system documentation including loop drawings, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts
  • Provide field support for startup, commissioning, and emergency troubleshooting at remote well sites
  • Collaborate with production engineers and operations teams to optimize well performance through automation
  • Specify and select instrumentation (pressure, temperature, level, flow) for new and existing installations
  • Implement cybersecurity best practices and network segmentation for industrial control systems
  • Mentor junior automation technicians and provide technical guidance during project execution

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in industrial automation with at least 5 years in upstream oil and gas
  • Expert proficiency with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix PLC platforms
  • Strong working knowledge of HMI software (FactoryTalk View, Ignition, or similar)
  • Experience with communication protocols including Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and serial communications
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and loop sheets
  • Proven track record of successful field commissioning and startup support in remote locations
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, or related field
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to Carlsbad, NM field locations

Qualifications

  • Experience with SCADA systems (CygNet, TotalFlow, or similar oil & gas platforms)
  • Knowledge of chemical injection, vapor recovery, and artificial lift automation
  • Familiarity with safety instrumented systems (SIS) and API RP 14C standards
  • Certifications such as ISA CAP, Siemens, or Allen-Bradley preferred
  • Strong troubleshooting methodology and root cause analysis skills

Pay

  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience
  • Annual performance bonus targeting 15–20% of base salary
  • Field premium for days worked in Carlsbad area

Schedule

  • 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off)
  • 40% field work at well sites, 60% office/remote planning
  • On-call rotation for after-hours support (1 week per month)
