The Western District of Missouri is currently accepting applications for one Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) to be assigned to the Criminal Division in the Kansas City Office. As an AUSA, you will prosecute federal crimes, including terrorism, public corruption, child exploitation, firearms, and narcotics. The office also represents the United States in civil lawsuits against the government and actions to collect judgments and restitution on behalf of victims and taxpayers.

This position is located in Kansas City, Missouri, a vibrant city known for its fountains, barbecue, jazz, and rich cultural heritage. AUSAs in the Western District of Missouri are immediately assigned cases—some high-profile—and work with law enforcement agencies to investigate federal crimes, research and brief legal issues, and represent the United States in hearings, trials, and appeals. Responsibilities increase in complexity as skills and experience progress.

Responsibilities

• Prosecute federal criminal cases, including terrorism, public corruption, child exploitation, firearms, and narcotics offenses.
• Represent the United States in civil lawsuits and actions to collect judgments and restitution for victims and taxpayers.
• Work with law enforcement agencies to investigate federal crimes.
• Research and brief legal issues.
• Represent the United States in hearings, trials, and appeals.
• Exercise discretion and responsibility in high-stakes litigation.

Requirements

• Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree and be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction).
• At least 1 year of post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
• United States citizenship or nationality.
• Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing.
• Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
• Assistant United States Attorneys must generally reside in the district to which they are appointed or within 25 miles thereof.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must certify registration with the Selective Service System or be exempt.
• Occasional travel may be required.

Pay

Assistant United States Attorney pay is administratively determined based on years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $78,000 to $183,016, which includes locality pay.
