About the role
Founding Editor at Capital B Augusta, a local newsroom launching in Augusta, Georgia. Reporting to the Executive Editor.
What You'll Do
- Build Capital B Augusta's editorial operation from the ground up.
- Launch and lead our newsletter.
- Report, assign and edit journalism that helps residents navigate civic life.
- Establish editorial workflows, coverage priorities and newsroom routines.
- Create recurring newsletter features readers come to rely on.
- Build short-form video that explains local news, showcases reporting and helps grow Capital B Augusta's audience across social platforms.
- Lead a team of part-time community ambassadors to ensure community questions shape coverage.
- Partner with Capital B's audience, product and design teams to grow the newsletter.
- Use audience data, experimentation and community feedback to improve our journalism and increase engagement.
- Help develop responsible AI workflows that make local journalism more useful, accessible and transparent.
- Build editorial systems that can grow as the newsroom expands.
What You'll Bring
- A deep understanding of Augusta and the issues affecting Black communities there.
- At least five years of reporting and editing experience.
- Strong news judgment and excellent editing skills.
- Experience with newsletters or audience-focused journalism.
- Experience creating compelling social video or a willingness and enthusiasm to become comfortable on camera.
- An entrepreneurial mindset and excitement about building something new.
- Comfort making thoughtful decisions when there isn't already a playbook.
- A commitment to community-informed journalism.
- A habit of using audience data, experimentation and community feedback to make editorial decisions.
- The ability to collaborate across editorial, audience and business teams.
What Success Looks Like
- Launch a newsletter that becomes an indispensable part of how Black Augustans understand what's happening in their city and what to do next.
- Build trust throughout the community, grow a loyal audience, establish systems that can scale, and help demonstrate a new model for sustainable, community-centered local journalism.
