Audio Visual Manager | Full-Time | Tsongas Center (UMass - Lowell)

About The Venue
The Audio Visual Manager role is based at the Tsongas Center, a 7,000-seat multi-purpose arena on the campus of UMass Lowell (UML). The Tsongas Center is one of the premier arenas in the New England region and is home to UML Division I Men’s Ice Hockey, Men’s and Women’s basketball programs, and the Boston Fleet, as well as a variety of events including concerts, family shows, comedy, and other live events. The venue serves as a public space for the community and has been a staple of the region for the past 25 years.
Responsibilities
Preparation & Production
- Manage and take ownership for all use of A/V and technical services involved in event production and broadcasting at, from, or involving the arena, including setup/operational technical expertise, approval for usage, and leadership for all video, audio, lighting, WiFi/network, and production systems and equipment (e.g., control room components, audio booth & equipment, video and camera equipment, LED Daktronics ribbons/video boards, Hawkeye Innovations, 3-Play replay systems, Ross Expressions, marketing and/or PowerPoint presentations, cable interfaces and feeds).
- Create and modify industry-leading messaging, graphics, digital or PowerPoint presentations, and video/audio/effects content to support each game/event.
- Assist in the creation, management, and evaluation of standard operating procedures for all building A/V matters, presentation or broadcast services, and digital media productions and assets.
- Ensure all content is delivered to playback, storage, and show control systems in compliance with governing stakeholders and policies.
- Prepare A/V equipment for additional events inside and outside the arena, such as press conferences, banquets, and pep rallies.
- Oversee game day production, including video boards, audio programs, lighting, and other elements for sporting events and in-house shows.
Maintenance & Inventory
- Ensure all owned and utilized A/V equipment remains game/event ready, properly set up, tested, and monitored for functionality.
- Troubleshoot and replace non-working equipment immediately to avoid service interruptions.
- Maintain all physical A/V spaces and storage structures (e.g., control room, audio booth, racks, cabinets, storage closets) in professional, safe, and functional order, including shared venue spaces.
- Participate in the development and administration of the A/V budget, forecasting funds for staffing, equipment repair/replacement, and supplies.
- Order and receive equipment or supplies within budget guidelines.
- Develop long-range plans for future venue A/V needs, including capital improvements to enhance event capabilities.
- Perform ongoing and annual inventory of all A/V equipment and provide reports to leadership.
- Assist with capital improvement plans, including equipment replacement, gathering quotes, and discussing needs with stakeholders.
Personnel & Involvement
- Serve as a contributing member of the venue management team, collaborating with the university, city, community, tour groups, event leaders, promoters, and other stakeholders.
- Maintain a customer-first mentality to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all guests.
- Attend or represent OVG and UML functions with professionalism.
- Recruit, select, schedule, motivate, and evaluate A/V and technical staff, including part-time employees, freelancers, and third-party contractors.
- Provide or coordinate staff training and cross-training, and address performance deficiencies.
- Assist with payroll, venue access, and parking validation for part-time staff.
- Collaborate with marketing, corporate partnerships, university leadership, and event promoters to understand and exceed their A/V needs.
- Manage third-party service providers by enforcing agreed-upon scopes of service within signed agreements.
- Perform physical duties including lifting, carrying, moving equipment, extensive walking, working at heights, and operating in environments with moderate to loud noise.
- Ensure staff adhere to safety guidelines and work efficiently.
- Work extended and irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of A/V and technical experience in a sports and entertainment facility; experience in a sports complex or arena preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent industry experience.
- Experience in arena/stadium operations and events.
- Supervisory experience highly preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Self-starter with proactive, flexible, and deadline-focused mindset.
- Extensive knowledge of video and/or scoreboard production in a sports and entertainment facility.
- Experience integrating, implementing, or refreshing broadcast control room equipment, including familiarity with modern broadcast cabling infrastructure.
- Exemplary communication skills and professionalism for interacting with business contacts, vendors, and clients.
- Knowledge and experience working with the NCAA and concert/family/event show promoters.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present new ideas and document issues and solutions.
- Ability to terminate AV cables (e.g., Cat 6, BNC, XLR, Triax).
- Proven understanding of guest and customer service.
- Forklift certified or willing to obtain certification.
- Knowledge and practice of OSHA requirements.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire, a valid CPR/AED certificate.
Skills
- Proficient knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment, including printers, copiers, and computers.
- Proficient use of mobile or land-line phones and email services.
- Ability to work with graphic programs or create graphics.
- Clear and concise communication skills with the ability to convey messages effectively.
Working Conditions
- Minimal travel (<10% of work time) may be required for UML functions, including air travel and overnight stays.
- Flexible schedule, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
- Frequent bending, lifting heavy objects, sitting, standing, and extensive walking through the building, including inclines and stairs.
- Exposure to multiple external elements and moderate to loud noise environments.
Pay
Annual salary range: $62,500 to $72,500.
