About the role

Under the direct supervision of the Chair of the Department of Music and as part of a collaborative team of performing-arts and equipment technicians across the College of Arts and Letters, the Audio Engineer and A/V Systems Technician oversees audio systems and equipment in the College’s performing-arts venues and classrooms. The role provides comprehensive support for live performances, recording-studio sessions, video production, and streaming across multiple disciplines. As the staff audio lead for performing-arts facilities, the position supports academic productions, concerts, recitals, and the needs of faculty and guest artists/designers. The incumbent works closely with the College Technical Director on operations, maintenance, and upgrades of performing-arts venues, classrooms, and related academic spaces, with project workloads concentrated during winter/summer sessions and academic breaks.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain audio, video, streaming, and recording equipment in shops, stages, and classrooms.
  • Recommend and manage the purchase of audio, recording, and backstage-communications equipment for performance venues, classrooms, and music-studio/production stations.
  • Assign and coordinate audio equipment, support, and supplies for theatrical, dance, music, college, and rental events.
  • Coordinate with the College Technical Director to ensure adequate physical resources and labor staffing for scheduled events.
  • Supervise stage and event crews, including casual workers, student workers, and students completing coursework for credit.
  • Train and supervise students and employees on the operation, care, and maintenance of audio consoles and audio/video/streaming equipment and support systems.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and model safe work habits.

Requirements

  • Four years of professional experience in live audio engineering, studio recording, acoustic engineering, audio-system design/installation, audio editing, or similar support for live or recorded entertainment; OR a bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Music, Recording Arts and Technology, Audio/Sound Design, or a related field plus two years of professional experience.
  • Familiarity with both digital and analog audio-reinforcement and recording systems.
  • Experience with audio recording and editing software and applications.
  • Knowledge of musical instruments, their handling and care, and how they interface with electronic audio systems and venue acoustics.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and record-keeping skills.
  • High degree of independence, creativity, and ingenuity for solving technical problems.
  • Computer literacy: typing, word processing, cloud navigation, internet use, email management, and peripheral/component configuration.
  • Demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
  • Successful completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) prior to hire.
  • Residency in the State of California required upon date of hire.

Desired Qualifications

  • Certification in specialty audio systems and technology, such as Dante Certification for digital audio/video/networking systems or L-Acoustics equipment and sound systems.
  • Advanced degrees or certifications in audio technology, audio engineering, acoustics, recording engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience working for a theatre, repertory, stock company, production company, or entertainment organization engaged in audio-system design, installation, maintenance, and application.
  • Professional audio design or recording experience for theatre, film, television, or related media/entertainment fields.
  • Familiarity with computer-aided design and drafting software.
  • Experience with video equipment and/or streaming software and applications.

Pay

$4,595 – $6,694/monthly (budgeted hiring salary: $4,595/monthly).

Schedule

Full-time, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Non-exempt classification; temporary position (expires on or before one year from start date; may be extended or converted to permanent).
