ATTORNEY SUPERVISOR
About the role
The California Department of Social Services (CDSS), Legal Division is recruiting to hire one permanent full-time Attorney Supervisor in the Information, Personnel & Audits (IPA) Bureau of the Information, Technology & Administrative Litigation (ITAL) Branch. The IPA Bureau provides legal advice and representation across the entire Department, covering areas such as human resources, audits, privacy, public records, information technology, and legal agreements.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, direct the workload of, and evaluate the performance of subordinate attorneys and paralegals.
- Act in a lead capacity in the absence of the Assistant Chief Counsel.
- Develop strategies and best practices for the most complex assignments.
- Personally handle the most difficult assignments within the Bureau.
- Provide legal advice and representation in a wide range of employment matters, including personnel actions, policy reviews, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation prevention and claims, whistleblower complaints, criminal background reviews, and conflict of interest.
- Oversee the work of a group of attorneys and paralegals in preparing for representation of the Department before the State Personnel Board, Office of Administrative Hearings, and other administrative bodies.
- Review pleadings, briefs, and other legal documents related to disciplinary and other matters developed by subordinate attorneys.
Requirements
The successful candidate must possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and be licensed to practice law in California. Experience in public sector employment law, particularly in representing state or county departments, is highly desirable. Excellent analytical and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to manage a caseload of complex cases.
Qualifications
The selected candidate will be subject to a criminal record background check clearance by the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A criminal conviction in and of itself will not necessarily bar an offer of employment. This position is designated under the Conflict-of-Interest Code.
Skills
Strong interpersonal communication skills, the ability to analyze complex issues, and the capability to draft clear and concise legal opinions within tight deadlines are crucial. The ability to effectively communicate complex and sensitive issues to high-level management is also essential.

$12,590.00 - $16,900.00 per year.
