About the role

The Attorney Supervisor manages and oversees a team of attorneys and legal staff, supporting the Assistant Chief Counsel in representing the Department of Industrial Relations and its division chiefs and managers.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, coordinates, and reviews the work of OD—Legal attorneys, legal analysts, and other legal support staff.
  • Helps oversee the day-to-day operations of OD—Legal.
  • Aids the Assistant Chief Counsel in ensuring direct managerial support and oversight to improve the coordination and efficiency of the legal office workflow.

Requirements

Active membership in the California State Bar, and at least eight (8) years of legal experience in the practice of law.

Working Conditions

The position is located at: 355 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90071. It is in an office environment on the 18th floor of a 45-story office building. Employees are required to work extensively on computers, handle their own word processing, and handle secretarial support is generally limited to the finalization and filing process. This position requires in-state travel, either locally within Southern California, or for one or two-night overnight trips within California, based on assignments, and as determined according to the needs of the Department. Attorneys are expected to handle their own word processing, and secretarial support is generally limited to the finalization and filing process. Attorneys are expected to work all hours necessary to accomplish their assignments, and although they will generally average 40 hours a week, longer work hours may occasionally be required. Partial telework schedules are available, which will be determined after consultation with the Assistant Chief Counsel.

The SOQ also serves as documentation of each applicant’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. Applicants must provide a response to the following three topics—repeating each topic as a heading—then providing a response under each topic heading: Describe your experience and approach to supervising, coaching, leading and mentoring attorneys or legal staff. Include examples of how you have led team members, supported professional growth, and ensured high quality work. Summarize your interest in the Attorney Supervisor position and how your prior experience qualifies you for the position. Identify up to five (5) matters in which you have served as lead counsel in either (a) a civil or criminal court trial, or (b) administrative hearing that lasted more than one day (including morning and afternoon sessions), or (c) writ proceeding, or (d) appellate matter, by (1) case name, (2) court or administrative hearing forum, and (3) issue(s).
