Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Counsel (ACC), the Attorney Supervisor manages and oversees a team of Attorneys responsible for representing the Director of the Department of Industrial Relations, the Department, and division chiefs and managers in various subject areas within the Department’s jurisdiction.
Responsibilities
- Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work of OD—Legal attorneys, legal analysts, and other legal support staff.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of OD—Legal in coordination with the Assistant Chief Counsel.
- Provide direct managerial support and oversight to improve coordination and efficiency of the legal office workflow.
- Assist the ACC in ensuring high-quality legal services and operational effectiveness.
Requirements
- Active membership in the California State Bar.
- At least eight (8) years of legal experience in the practice of law.
- Experience in supervising, coaching, leading, and mentoring attorneys or legal staff.
- Demonstrated experience as lead counsel in at least five (5) significant legal matters, including:
- Civil or criminal court trials,
- Administrative hearings lasting more than one day,
- Writ proceedings, or
- Appellate matters.
- Ability to handle in-state travel, including local and overnight trips within California as needed.
- Proficiency in legal research, drafting documents, and managing word processing with limited secretarial support.
Qualifications
Applicants must submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ), a narrative demonstrating how their experience, training, education, knowledge, skills, and abilities qualify them for the position. The SOQ must:
- Include the applicant’s name at the top of the first page.
- Be no longer than five (5) pages in length, using 12-point font.
- Address the following three topics under separate headings:
- Experience and approach to supervising, coaching, leading, and mentoring attorneys or legal staff, including examples of team leadership, professional growth support, and ensuring high-quality work.
- Interest in the Attorney Supervisor position and how prior experience qualifies the applicant.
- Up to five (5) matters where the applicant served as lead counsel, including:
- Case name,
- Court or administrative hearing forum, and
- Issue(s) addressed.
Resumes, cover letters, and other documentation do not replace the SOQ. Incomplete or non-compliant SOQs will result in disqualification.
Working Conditions
- Position located at 355 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90071, on the 18th floor of a 45-story office building.
- Office environment requiring extensive computer use for drafting documents, research, email communication, file review, and training.
- Standard business hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional longer hours as needed to accomplish assignments.
- Partial telework schedules available, determined in consultation with the Assistant Chief Counsel.
- Access to public transportation, bike parking, cultural institutions, dining, and fitness centers.
