Multiple permanent, full-time Attorney IV positions available in Los Angeles County with hybrid telework.

About the role

The Caltrans Legal Division is seeking dedicated attorneys to support the Department and the State of California. The successful candidate will join an established team representing Caltrans in high-stakes litigation and house counsel work. Caltrans Legal is a full-service, in-house law office with statewide responsibility for meeting Caltrans' diverse litigation and transactional law needs.

The division represents Caltrans in Superior, Federal, and Appellate courts, as well as before the Office of Administrative Hearings and the State Personnel Board. It advises on federal and state statutes, regulations, and judicial case law, impacting Caltrans' policy makers, operational needs, and associated risks.

Caltrans Legal provides professional development through practical, on-the-job experience, supportive supervision, teamwork, statewide committees, and workshops to foster statewide relationships and learning.

Responsibilities

  • Represent Caltrans in litigation before Superior, Federal, and Appellate courts, the Office of Administrative Hearings, and the State Personnel Board.
  • Provide legal representation in transactional areas for all Caltrans programs.
  • Advise on federal and state statutes, regulations, and judicial case law, and their impact on Caltrans' policy and operations.
  • Engage in high-stakes litigation and house counsel work.

Requirements

  • Active membership in the California State Bar.
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle.
  • Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Attorney/Attorney III/Attorney IV exam. Candidates without current eligibility must be on the state examination list.

Qualifications

Consideration will be given to candidates in the following classifications:

  • Attorney IV: $11,993.00 - $16,096.00 monthly (new hires start at the minimum salary).
  • Attorney: $7,969.00 - $10,473.00 (Range A) or $8,969.00 - $12,026.00 (Range B) monthly.
  • Attorney III: $10,852.00 - $15,325.00 monthly.

If basing eligibility on education, unofficial transcripts or a U.S. equivalency report for foreign degrees must be provided. Birthdates and social security numbers must be redacted.
