About the role

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Sacramento Legal Office seeks highly motivated transactional attorneys with interest and/or experience in public contracting, drafting, reviewing and approval of contracts. Our transactional attorneys provide in-house legal support for a variety of types of contracts, including procurement contracts for both Information Technology (IT) and non-IT goods and services, architecture and engineering services, public works, and contracts with State, Local and Federal Agencies. Additionally, our transactional attorneys provide legal support with California Public Records Act (CPRA) requests and Legislative Bill analyses.

Responsibilities

  • Studies, interprets and applies laws, court decisions, and other authorities in the preparation of moderately difficult and/or complex cases, opinions and briefs;
  • Prepares and presents cases for trial;
  • Does a variety of transactional work under the general direction of a Deputy Chief Counsel, Assistant Chief Counsel and/or Attorney Supervisor.

Requirements

The position requires a CA BAR membership License. You will be required to provide a copy of your license prior to being hired. Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for this position include:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university;
  • One year of experience in the field of law;
  • Successfully passed the California Bar Exam;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and policies;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

Skills

Skills required for this position include:

  • Strong legal research and analysis skills;
  • Experience with contract drafting and negotiation;
  • Knowledge of public contracting laws and regulations;
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Pay

The starting salary for this position is $10,852.00 - $15,325.00 per year, with potential for advancement to higher levels based on performance and experience.
