ATTORNEY, ASSISTANT CHIEF COUNSEL

About the role

The California Department of Social Services' Legal Division, Family and Adult Programs Policy and Litigation Branch (FAB) is seeking to recruit one (1) qualified, competent and enthusiastic attorney to serve as Assistant Chief Counsel (ACC) in FAB. This ACC position is one (1) of three (3) ACC positions within the branch.

Responsibilities

• Work independently with minimal supervision in the planning, organizing and supervision of a dynamic and hard-working team of six (6) attorneys and expanding.
• Provide critical and complex legal guidance, analysis and work product.
• Assess workload and staffing.
• Prepare position justifications.
• Recruit.
• Complete probation reports and annual reviews.
• Develop administrative processes to facilitate staff work.
• Perform own assigned highly sensitive and complex assignments.
• Execute management responsibilities including but not limited to:
• Assess workload and staffing.
• Prepare position justifications.
• Recruitment.
• Completion of probation reports and annual reviews.
• Development of administrative processes to facilitate staff work.

Requirements

The position requires a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired. Please Note: A Statement of Qualifications or Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted along with your application to be considered for this position.

Qualifications

The position requires a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. The minimum qualifications are:

• A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• Admission to practice law in the State of California.
• At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of law, preferably in the area of public interest law.
• Experience working in a public agency setting.
• Experience managing a team of attorneys.

Skills

Knowledge of, or experience with, providing policy-focused legal advice to a public entity is preferred.

Benefits

The position offers a salary range of $14,513.00 - $17,742.00 per year, pending DOF approval. The position is pending DOF approval.
