About the role
The Athletics Program Coordinator is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, supervising, and evaluating assigned youth and adult sports leagues, tournaments, community recreation programs, special events, and outdoor recreation activities. This position provides leadership for assigned programs, supervises seasonal staff and volunteers, recruits and supports volunteer coaches, and works collaboratively with department leadership to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality recreation opportunities for the community.
Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, coordinate, implement, and evaluate assigned sports leagues, tournaments, camps, clinics, community recreation programs, outdoor recreation activities, and special events.
- Develop seasonal schedules, registration timelines, game schedules, tournament brackets, and program calendars.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements to increase participation and operational efficiency.
- Maintain accurate records and reports on program participation.
- Aid in marketing and promotion of recreation programs through community outreach, social media, printed materials, and other communication efforts.
- Recruit, interview, assist with hiring, train, schedule, supervise, mentor, and evaluate seasonal employees assigned to recreation programs.
- Provide initial orientation and ongoing training for staff working in recreation programs.
- Foster professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and excellent customer service among employees.
- Help ensure County employees and seasonal staff adhere to department policies, procedures, and dress code requirements.
- Recruit, coordinate, and support volunteer coaches for youth recreation programs.
- Maintain regular communication with parents, coaches, participants, officials, volunteers, schools, and community partners.
- Provide volunteer coaches with orientation, program expectations, and ongoing support.
- Address participant concerns, resolve conflicts professionally, and promote a positive experience for all participants and spectators.
- Care for facility usage and ensure recreation facilities are prepared and operational for scheduled activities.
- Prepare athletic fields, courts, and recreation areas for practices, games, tournaments, and events.
- This may include operating department equipment.
- Assist with cleaning, maintenance, and inspection of recreation facilities, athletic fields, and program equipment.
- Report maintenance and safety concerns to department leadership or appropriate department contact.
- Schedule officials and coordinate event staffing for athletic programs.
- Aid the Director and Assistant Director with developing and monitoring program budgets and financial reports as assigned.
- Order equipment, uniforms, shirts, awards, and other program supplies.
- Aid in office operations, participant registration, customer service, and other administrative duties as needed.
- Maintain program records, reports, and documentation.
- Work with the Director and Assistant Director to develop and enforce department policies and procedures.
- Assist in identifying and managing program risk and liability concerns.
- Ensure programs operate in accordance with established safety standards and best practices.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and complete required incident documentation.
- Assists with community recreation and special events as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Experience participating in, coaching, officiating, organizing, or working with sports, recreation, outdoor recreation, or community programs is preferred.
- Any combination of education, training, volunteer experience, or work experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the essential duties of the position will be considered.
- A valid Utah Driver License, or the ability to obtain one within a reasonable period following employment.
- CPR/First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of employment.
- A Food Handler's permit, or the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of employment.
