Primary Function Gill St. Bernard’s School seeks an experienced, student-centered, and collaborative Athletic Trainer to oversee all aspects of sports medicine services for the school’s interscholastic athletic program. The Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and management of athletic injuries and illnesses while promoting the health, safety, and well-being of student-athletes. As a key member of the Athletics Department, the Athletic Trainer serves as the primary healthcare professional for athletic programs, works closely with coaches, school nurses, physicians, families, and administrators, and helps foster a culture of excellence, sportsmanship, and student-athlete development consistent with the mission and values of Gill St. Bernard’s School. This position reports to the Athletic Director and is a full-time, 12-month position requiring flexibility to work evenings, weekends, school breaks, and occasional holidays based on athletic schedules and special events. Essential Functions And Responsibilities Athletic Training and Sports Medicine Provide comprehensive athletic training services for all Middle School and Upper School athletic programs.Assess, treat, and manage athletic injuries and illnesses in accordance with national, state, and professional standards.Develop and administer injury prevention programs, including conditioning, taping, bracing, stretching, and wellness education.Create and oversee rehabilitation programs for injured student-athletes.Determine participation status and return-to-play recommendations in consultation with physicians and healthcare providers.Maintain accurate and up-to-date confidential medical records, including injury and accident reports, treatment logs and daily treatment documentation, medical clearances and participation status, pre-season physicals, and concussion baseline testing and return-to-play protocol. Event and Practice Coverage Provide athletic training coverage for home athletic contests, practices and post-season competitions.Coordinate emergency medical response procedures for athletic venues.Maintain emergency action plans and ensure staff familiarity with protocols.Coordinate medical coverage for tournaments, special events, and post-season competitions. Student-Athlete Health and Safety Lead concussion management protocols, including baseline testing, monitoring, return-to-learn, and return-to-play procedures.Educate student-athletes, families, and coaches regarding injury prevention, nutrition, hydration, recovery, and overall wellness.Monitor environmental conditions and implement heat illness, lightning, and other weather-related safety protocols.Ensure compliance with NJSIAA, state, and local health and safety requirements. Collaboration and Communication Serve as the primary liaison between student-athletes, families, physicians, school nurses, coaches, and administrators regarding sports medicine concerns.Coordinate referrals to physicians, specialists, and rehabilitation providers as needed.Participate in athletics department meetings and school initiatives.Maintain positive and professional relationships with students, parents, faculty, and staff. Program Administration Manage athletic training facilities, equipment, and supplies.Develop and monitor the athletic training budget in collaboration with the Athletic Director.Maintain inventory and oversee purchasing of medical supplies and equipment.Ensure compliance with all applicable healthcare, safety, privacy, and recordkeeping standards.Stay current with best practices through continuing education and professional development. Leadership Provide leadership in the development and implementation of comprehensive sports medicine policies and procedures.Assist in evaluating and improving health and safety practices across all athletic programs.Support the mission, values, and goals of Gill St. Bernard’s School and its athletic department.Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes, emphasizing confidentiality, integrity, respect, and sportsmanship.Other duties as assigned or required by the demands of the position and administration. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, or related field.Current Athletic Trainer certification through the Board of Certification (BOC).Current New Jersey Athletic Trainer License or eligibility for licensure.CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.Must maintain annual certification in NJSIAA Coursework requirements; First Aid, CPR, AED, Concussion, Heat Acclimatization, Implicit Bias and Be Nice training.Minimum of 3–5 years of athletic training experience, preferably in a secondary school, collegiate, or sports medicine setting. Experience working in an independent school environment preferred.Strong knowledge of injury prevention, rehabilitation, concussion management, and emergency care.Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.Demonstrated experience and competencies for performance responsibilities.Familiarity with electronic medical record systems and injury-tracking software. Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move through athletic facilities and outdoor venues for extended periods.Ability to lift, move and carry athletic training equipment (including water coolers up to approximately 65 pounds).Ability to respond quickly to athletic emergencies. Compensation range: $60,000 - $70,000. Further consideration may be given to candidates with significant experience, education, or certifications.
