Athletic Program Manager (Orange Avenue)

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula (BGCP) empowers 6,700 TK-College students across 30 sites from East Palo Alto to Daly City, providing high-quality academic programs, enrichment activities, and mental health services to ensure socio-economically disadvantaged youth thrive in school and beyond.

About the role

The Athletic Program Manager oversees physical education programs and activities at BGCP clubhouses, partner schools, and school districts. This role involves planning, developing, and implementing programs, supervising staff, and building relationships with partner organizations to expand impact and reach for Kindergarten through 12th graders. The position reports to the Assistant Director of Sports Leagues.

Responsibilities

• Prepare Youth For Success
  • Plan and oversee the administration of the Physical Education Enrichment Program and all Athletic program activities.
  • Develop and implement recreational sports activities to engage youth in healthy physical fitness and long-term habits.
  • Use athletics to track and build athletic skill and physical fitness, fostering continuous growth.
  • Teach good sportsmanship and teamwork through competition and direct instruction.
• Development Framework
  • Establish clubhouse program objectives aligned with organizational goals and mission.
  • Oversee day-to-day Physical Education Enrichment program activities to meet established standards.
  • Encourage member participation in diverse activities and provide constructive feedback to develop skills.
  • Demonstrate leadership to ensure safety, good conduct, and development of members.
  • Help youth discover passions and guide them into structured programs, including the Coach Em Up Program.
• Program Development And Implementation
  • Establish and maintain program goals ensuring health and safety of members.
  • Ensure staff understand and communicate program standards, maintain safe environments, and keep equipment in good condition.
  • Organize and implement instructional programs to achieve academic and athletic success.
  • Plan and teach physical education classes or intramural sports at partner schools as needed.
  • Modify instructional resources to meet diverse student needs, backgrounds, and learning styles.
  • Continually evaluate and adapt programs to respond to member needs, including gender and cultural diversity.
  • Determine, measure, evaluate, and report performance metrics.
  • Analyze similar after-school youth programs.
  • Manage Athletic Department programming and activity expenditures within the approved budget.
• Supervision
  • Allocate and monitor work assigned to program volunteers and staff, providing ongoing feedback and appraisals.
  • Identify and support training and development opportunities for staff and volunteers.
  • Oversee proper record-keeping and reporting of activities and events.
  • Ensure productive and effective performance by all Athletic Department staff and volunteers.
  • Be physically present for all Athletic offerings at the clubhouse to maintain supervision and high-quality services.
• Marketing and Public Relations
  • Increase visibility of Club Athletic programs through daily schedules, event announcements, and promotional materials.
  • Establish community and school partnerships where appropriate.
• Additional Responsibilities
  • Coach, officiate, and facilitate athletic leagues, including Indoor Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, and Flag Football.
  • Teach the elements of ROOTS: Respect for the Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, and Self.
  • Model and teach participants to Honor the Game through fair play and sportsmanship.
  • Develop and structure sports leagues: evaluate players, create balanced teams, and establish league rules and schedules.
  • Oversee special programs/events (e.g., Awards Programs) and participate in other unit activities as needed.
  • Drive club van periodically to support league operations.
  • Consult with parents concerning Athletic members and club issues.
  • Work with BGCP’s development department to secure funding for the Athletic department.
  • Maintain daily contact with Club staff, members, and external groups (e.g., schools, donors, parents) to resolve issues and provide guidance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or applicable work experience.
• 3+ years of experience planning and supervising activities based on developmental needs of children in a similar organization.
• Prior coaching and officiating experience.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics.
• Demonstrated organizational, staff, and project management abilities.
• Passion for working with youth.
• Spanish fluency is strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

The role requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching, crouching, squatting, and/or crawling. Fine finger dexterity and near vision acuity are necessary. The position may involve lifting or carrying objects up to 25 pounds. Approximately 20% sitting and 80% walking or standing. The work environment is typically moderate in noise but may occasionally be louder. All requirements are subject to reasonable accommodations.

Schedule

Academic School Year:

• Monday - Friday: 10:00am - 7:00pm or
• Tuesday - Friday: 10:00am - 7:00pm and Saturday 9:00am - 6:00pm

Summer 2026:

• Monday/Wednesday/Friday: 8:00am - 5:00pm
• Tuesday/Thursday: 10:00am - 7:00pm

Pay

Salary range: $75,000 - $85,000 per year, depending on experience.
