About the role

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is seeking an innovative and dynamic Athletic Facility Manager to assist in the management and operation of the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex. This position involves planning, organizing, and directing athletic reservations, tournaments, and stadium events, as well as leading staff trainings and professional development. The incumbent will review and complete reservation requests, plan large events, manage vendors and contracts, and collaborate with the maintenance team to ensure facility readiness. Additionally, the role includes exploring new marketing strategies, facility management solutions, and innovations to maintain the Sportsplex as a premier athletic facility.

The preferred candidate will have strong experience in event operations and a proven ability to build and maintain professional and community partnerships. This full-time position requires availability during some evenings, weekends, and holidays based on event schedules.

Facility Information

The Mecklenburg County Sportsplex, recognized as the 2023 Sports Field Management Association (SFMA) Professional Soccer Field of the Year, is a premier regional sports complex located on 175 acres in south Charlotte, North Carolina. The facility features:

• Nine synthetic turf multipurpose fields
• Two championship-quality natural grass multipurpose fields
• A 5,000-seat natural grass stadium

The Sportsplex hosts a year-round schedule of local, regional, and national events for youth, high school, collegiate, amateur, and professional athletics, including soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, rugby, football, and other sports. Recent marquee events include the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships, Pop Warner National Championships, MLS NEXT Pro matches, the U.S. Open Cup, and various conference championships.

Responsibilities

• Manage fiscal operations, including budget planning, implementation, execution, and monitoring of facility revenue and expense goals
• Monitor facility revenue through daily admissions, facility passes, programs, rentals, and other sources
• Supervise maintenance, program, and customer service staff
• Manage and monitor vendor, agency, and individual contracts
• Participate in staff conferences to plan comprehensive recreation programs
• Investigate and address requests, suggestions, or complaints regarding recreation services
• Introduce new programs, equipment, and facilities to staff and the community
• Order equipment and supplies, and maintain inventory control
• Establish and maintain partnerships with agencies, neighborhood groups, and user groups
• Respond to emergency situations and complete statistical reports on programming, attendance, and facility usage
• Promote facility use for recreational activities and rentals
• Supervise full-time, part-time, and temporary employees, including scheduling, coaching, and annual reviews
• Approve program proposals and complete monthly safety checklists and site inspections

Requirements

• Minimum of four (4) years of experience in recreation programming
• One (1) year of supervisory experience or completion of an approved supervisory training program
• Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration, Park and Recreation, or a related field (combination of relevant experience and education may be accepted)
• Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License with County Driving Privileges
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn Active software and Advantage for reporting

• Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of public recreation programs for diverse age groups
• Understanding of facilities and equipment required for indoor and outdoor recreation activities
• Leadership in recreational activities, including supervisory skills
• Ability to develop, promote, schedule, and coordinate programs, classes, and special events
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written
• Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and adapt to changing work environments
• Skills in developing work standards, defining work methods, and meeting the needs of diverse populations

Pay

Salary Range: $52,132.00/yr - $68,423.25/yr
