The department oversees 22 NCAA Division III programs and two Division I programs (men’s and women’s lacrosse) in the BIG 10 Conference, along with club sports, intramurals, and fitness programming.

The Athletics Facilities Specialist will operate within a best-in-class athletic and recreation department at Johns Hopkins University. The role supports a culture of diversity and inclusiveness and values professional and personal development.

Responsibilities

  • Perform event-related set-up and break-down for athletic events, including moving sport-specific goals, posting signage, opening/closing restrooms, handling flags and windscreens, cleaning facilities, and inspecting for safety and readiness.
  • Confer with supervisors to determine athletic field needs and scheduled use, including lining and marking, grading pitching mounds, dragging/grooming playing fields, and ensuring sport-specific equipment (goals, nets, pitching cages) is in place.
  • Maintain all fields to meet intercollegiate competition standards per department, conference, and NCAA policies.
  • Operate equipment related to outdoor athletic facilities, such as tractors, bobcats, trucks, Gators, boom lifts, scissor lifts, and hand/power tools.
  • Use scaffolding and ladders as needed.
  • Perform custodial duties using hand- and power-operated equipment, including cleaning, waxing, and polishing gymnasium floors, hallways, wrestling mats, trophy cases, and swimming pool decks.
  • Transport and set up athletics-related equipment and supplies, such as gym equipment, wrestling mats, pitching machines, netting, batting cages, goals, and field marking canisters.
  • Repair, modify, and maintain athletic equipment, including painting and labeling according to established procedures.
  • Maintain facility grounds, walkways, and surfaces; empty and clean waste receptacles; dispose of waste and debris.
  • Remove snow and ice from playing surfaces and outdoor facility spaces, distributing melting materials to ensure safety compliance.
  • Maintain fences and perform basic landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Keep equipment and work areas clean and orderly; report faulty or broken equipment to supervisors.
  • Assist University Police and department staff with securing and unlocking facility spaces; report guest irregularities.
  • Assist with pick-up and drop-off of department deliveries.
  • Ensure worksite safety, utilize safety equipment, and report or correct safety issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

  • Ability to operate large, heavy equipment, including trucks, power-operated grounds equipment, field rollers, and field marking machines.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or more at times.
  • Ability to work as a team player and maintain a positive work environment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • General knowledge of athletics and recreational sports preferred.

Key Relationships

The Athletics Facilities Specialist is directly supervised by the Assistant Athletic Director, Facilities Operations, and collaborates closely with student-athletes, coaches, department staff, patrons, and other campus stakeholders.

Working Environment

This is a full-time bargaining unit position with frequent early morning, evening, and weekend work required throughout the year, as determined by a supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of related experience.
  • Valid Maryland driver’s license in good standing with the MVA.

All newly hired employees in Bargaining Unit positions are considered “probationary” until completion of 90 calendar days of employment. The university will notify the employees’ union.
