AT - Contract Specific CDL Driver Trainer

About the Role

The CDL Driver Trainer is responsible for all driver training functions for the CDL training program at their assigned location. This role involves training with an Ancora Training contracted company and their employees, pre-scheduled on six consecutive 9-week long cohorts. Due to the nature of the role, the employee may need to travel to another location.

Responsibilities

• Promotes and maintains a positive learning environment.

• Trains students in all areas of trucking/driving, including:
  • Administering written tests on classroom material and evaluating grades.
  • Conducting pre-trip inspections of commercial motor vehicles.
  • Instructing air-brake tests.
  • Instructing straight-line backing.
  • Instructing offset backing, right and left.
  • Instructing 45-degree alley-docking.
  • Instructing parallel parking, conventional side, and driver side.
• Utilizes effective delivery skills (e.g., eye contact, voice intonation, and various questioning techniques).
• Draws on personal experiences to relate the material presented.
• Uses required skills assessments to evaluate student progress in obtaining their Commercial Driver’s License.

Requirements

• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), with the class level meeting the required level of the position.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 3 years of verifiable on-the-road experience within the last 5 years.
• MVR and background check, including a drug screening.
• Ability to pass a road test, DOT physical, and DOT drug screen.
• Ability to maintain a valid Medical Examiner Certificate and pass ongoing DOT drug tests.
• Knowledge of procedures for and ability to execute pre-trip inspections, air-brake tests, and CDL driving essentials (e.g., straight-line backing, offset backing, 45-degree alley-docking, parallel parking).
• Ability to instruct shifting patterns (e.g., driving highway, city, night vs. day, in different weather conditions).
• Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to maintain vehicle equipment.

• Ability to show sensitivity to the needs and requirements of adult learners.

Physical Demands

• Mobility & Balance: Ability to frequently climb in/out of the cab, bend, squat, kneel, twist, and reach to perform pre/post-trip inspections and navigate tight spaces.
• Strength: Ability to crank trailer landing gear (often 100+ lbs), handle training and safety equipment, and potentially assist with loading/unloading.
• Endurance: Ability to sustain physical activity and remain alert during extended driving and instructional periods, including exposure to varying weather conditions such as heat, cold, wind, rain, ice, or snow.
• Sensory Acuity and Overall Health: Must possess and maintain a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and meet DOT physical qualifications required to hold a CDL, with or without reasonable accommodations.
• Specific Tasks & Considerations:
  • Physically demonstrating skills such as coupling/uncoupling trailers, performing inspections, and maneuvering large vehicles.
  • Working outdoors in various conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow while training.
