Assurance Manager
About the Role
The Assurance Manager supervises, directs, and reviews audit engagements through all stages—planning, field work, and wrap-up. This role includes marketing, networking, and business development, as well as ensuring engagement profitability through billings and collections. Responsibilities involve advising clients on economic and regulatory risks, resolving complex accounting issues, applying GAAP and GAAS, and assessing financial reporting control systems.
Responsibilities
- Control Environment:
- Applies knowledge of policies and procedures to enhance effectiveness or mitigate risks.
- Validates and assesses internal control over financial reporting.
- Identifies and communicates suggestions to improve client internal controls and accounting procedures.
- Delegates audit functions and supervises audit team, reviewing workpapers and conclusions onsite.
- Provides on-the-job training to engagement staff during field work.
- GAAP:
- Applies and documents understanding of GAAP principles to client transactions.
- Consults with clients on new accounting pronouncements and their impact.
- Presents alternative GAAP principles and drafts complex financial statements and footnote disclosures.
- Resolves complex accounting issues and documents resolutions, consulting BDO technical experts as needed.
- SEC and PCAOB:
- Applies SEC regulations and PCAOB guidelines, documenting their application.
- Reviews SEC filings (MD&A, financial statements, disclosures) for accuracy and completeness.
- Ensures quarterly reviews are properly performed and communications to the Audit Committee comply with guidelines.
- Reviews Section 404 internal control audit work and ensures compliance with independence requirements.
- GAAS:
- Applies professional standards (GAAS, PCAOB) in performing and supervising work.
- Guides team members and affirms their conclusions.
- Communicates required matters to the Audit Committee/Board.
- Uses efficiency tools such as statistical sampling and CAATS.
- Methodology:
- Applies BDO standards for quality service delivery.
- Conducts detailed reviews to ensure audits comply with assurance manual standards.
- Prepares or reviews communications to management and audit committees.
- Recommends outcomes for critical issues and oversees audit execution despite deadlines.
- Executes BDO methodology, including archiving and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance for public clients.
- Research:
- Defines and completes research projects using authoritative sources.
- Prepares memos supporting research and consults with others as needed.
- Presents issues to RTD or concurring reviewers effectively.
- Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervises Associates and Senior Associates, reviewing their work and providing feedback.
- Acts as a Career Advisor, scheduling workloads and managing performance.
- Provides on-the-job training and coaching.
- Performs other duties as required.
Requirements
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s degree in Accountancy preferred.
- Experience:
- Five (5) or more years of relevant audit experience and/or public accounting, private industry, or consulting experience.
- Prior significant supervisory experience required.
- Industry expertise in an assurance specialty preferred.
- License/Certifications:
- Active licensed US CPA, recognized international equivalent, or unique qualification as defined by BDO’s Assurance Licensing Policy required.
- If international equivalent, must obtain a US CPA license within firm-defined timeframe.
- Skills & Abilities:
- Sound GAAP and GAAS knowledge.
- Familiarity with SEC and PCAOB reporting rules.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent people development, delegation, and engagement scheduling skills.
- Executive presence for client interactions and presentations.
- Client development and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to resolve complex accounting issues and ensure engagement profitability.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with assurance applications and research tools preferred.
Pay
Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. Ranges by location:
- California: $120,000 - $140,000
- Colorado: $95,000 - $120,000
- Illinois: $100,000 - $125,000
- Maryland: $105,000 - $125,000
- Massachusetts: $105,000 - $115,000
- Minnesota: $95,000 - $110,000
- New Jersey: $104,000 - $112,000
- NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $110,000 - $150,000
- Ohio: $95,000 - $125,000
- Washington: $95,000 - $115,000
- Washington DC: $105,000 - $128,000
