About the role

As an Assistant Sales Manager, you will strategically manage categories to increase sales, total gross dollars, and market share. You will create and implement pricing, promotion, assortment, and shelf planograms based on detailed analysis of past performance, industry best practices, and consumer trends. Travel to assigned stores to collaborate with Department Managers and staff on merchandising plans to meet sales, gross, and labor targets.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a yearly category business plan based on detailed analysis of previous results and market trends.
  • Meet or exceed projected sales and profit contribution.
  • Create and maintain a detailed pricing strategy by zone and category.
  • Design and implement a promotional calendar by major category, supporting division merchandising strategy, and track results.
  • Design schematics and recommend adjacencies that support the role of the category.
  • Determine appropriate product assortment and authorize new items or discontinue lines based on category contribution.
  • Maintain scorecards to track sales, gross profit dollars, and share of each category.
  • Manage and maximize categories to achieve efficient use of vendor dollars.
  • Create sales and gross profit projections at the category level, rolling up to department and division projections.
  • Conduct in-depth post-promotional analysis at the item and category level.
  • Plan ads and displays in support of category plans and department initiatives.
  • Coordinate and communicate between stores, merchandising, and other departments.
  • Act as the primary contact within the division for all assigned category vendors.
  • Negotiate deals and provide business updates with vendors consistently.
  • Work closely with procurement to ensure desired service levels and optimum inventory position.
  • Attend key vendor planning meetings and facilitate program implementation with corporate merchandising.
  • Visit stores to observe the results of merchandising programs.
  • Support and implement corporate initiatives as appropriate for the division.
  • Directly supervise applicable office support staff.
  • Initiate and follow through on personnel actions, including hiring input and performance reviews.
  • Determine the need for, coordinate, and evaluate formal training activities and on-the-job training programs.

Requirements

  • 5-10+ years of retail/category experience.
  • 15 total years' experience in the grocery industry.
  • 5 years' experience managing people.

Skills

  • Field or relevant business experience with a solid understanding of marketing, merchandising, consumer research, and financial management practices.
  • Excellent understanding of store operations, merchandising methodologies, P&L, and financial management.
  • Strong financial, mathematical, statistical, marketing, and consumer research background to interpret how internal and external factors influence financial results.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to take initiative and make decisive yet appropriate decisions.
  • Strong planning and organizing skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective business relationships.
  • Strategy development and relationship management skills.
  • Skilled in Category Business Planning.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills and abilities.
  • Understanding of procurement, logistics, and inventory management.
  • Experience in managing specialty and import grocery categories.
  • Proficient in MS Office, especially Excel.

Travel Requirements

Division-wide travel, up to 50%.

Physical Environment

  • Work may be performed in a temperature-controlled environment.
  • Must sit, stand, or walk for extended periods of time.
  • May spend long periods at a desk or computer terminal.
  • May use calculators, keyboards, telephones, and other office equipment.
  • Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required.
  • Fast-paced work environment; some evening and weekend work may be required.

Pay

The salary range is $92,000 to $158,000 annually. Starting salary will vary based on criteria such as location, experience, and qualifications. There may be flexibility for exceptional candidates.
