The Associate Vice President (AVP) provides strategic leadership for all human resource functions and operations, including labor strategy, negotiations, contract administration, dispute resolution, talent acquisition, performance consultation, benefits administration, compensation, payroll, retention practices, risk management, and policy development. Reporting to the President, this position serves as the College’s senior human resources manager and a member of the senior management team. A significant focus of this role is enhancing employee success through talent management solutions aligned with Mott Community College’s Commitment to Employee Success.

The College employs approximately 450 regular full-time employees and 300 part-time faculty, including six bargaining units, exempt staff, and grant-funded employees.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct all human resource functions, including labor strategy, negotiations, and contract administration.
  • Manage dispute case resolution, talent acquisition, and employee development initiatives.
  • Oversee performance consultation, benefits administration, compensation, and classification systems.
  • Administer payroll, retention practices, risk management, and policy/procedure development.
  • Serve as the College’s representative for talent management and employee retention.
  • Develop and deliver talent management solutions that support the College’s commitment to employee success.
  • Provide leadership to a division of sixteen full-time employees, including direct supervision of four staff: an Assistant VP, Labor Manager, Risk/Safety & Emergency Manager, and HR Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a related field (required).
  • Five years of progressive leadership experience in human resources.
  • Demonstrated success in two or more HR functional areas (e.g., employment, compensation, talent management, labor relations).
  • Labor relations experience, including bargaining, grievance processes, contract administration, and dispute resolution.
  • Proven experience designing, implementing, and managing HR functions.
  • Knowledge of HR policies, procedures, and employment laws.
  • Familiarity with HRIS/HRMS systems and database applications.
  • Experience implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) talent management programming.
  • Knowledge of best practices in recruiting and retaining diverse employees, affirmative action, and equal employment opportunity policies.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment, managing multiple tasks simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in a related field.
  • Additional experience beyond the minimum requirements.
  • Two years of public sector experience as an HR Manager/Director.
  • Experience in a community college setting.
  • Chief spokesperson experience for labor relations.
  • SHRM certification or other advanced HR certifications.
  • Experience with talent management software.
  • Experience working with high-risk or underrepresented populations.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to remain stationary for several hours (~20% of the time).
  • Frequent use of a personal computer.
  • Movement across campus required.
  • Constant communication with others.
  • Occasional lifting of boxes/files/materials up to 30 pounds.

Schedule

Exempt, full-time position. Must maintain residency within 20 miles of the nearest College boundary within 24 months of hire. Flexibility is required to meet College needs, including occasional evening and/or weekend hours.
