Associate Scientist – Drug Formulation
At Insmed, every moment and every patient counts — and so does every person who joins in. As a global biopharmaceutical company dedicated to transforming the lives of patients with serious and rare diseases, you’ll be part of a community that prioritizes the human experience, celebrates curiosity, and values every person’s contributions to meaningful progress.
About The Role
We’re looking for an Associate Scientist on the Drug Formulation team to help us expand what’s possible for patients with serious diseases. Reporting to the Senior Scientist, you’ll focus on the development, optimization, and characterization of nanoparticle (NP)-based drug delivery systems. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team engaged in non-viral vehicle formulation and characterization, supporting platform build and project-level activities.
Responsibilities
- Work on formulation and characterization of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) and other nanoparticle-based delivery systems for platform development and project support
- Design and execute formulation studies, including nucleic acid encapsulation into nanoparticle systems, analytical testing, and stability evaluations to finalize formulation compositions for RNA/gene-based therapies
- Perform comprehensive physicochemical characterization of nanoparticle formulations, including size, polydispersity index (PDI), surface charge (zeta potential), encapsulation efficiency, drug loading, and release kinetics
- Apply a broad set of analytical techniques such as DLS, NTA, UV-Vis spectroscopy, SEC, SDS-PAGE, HPLC, and fluorescence-based assays to evaluate nanoparticles and drug products
- Synthesize and develop nanoparticle-based formulations for various therapeutic areas
- Support design, synthesis, and purification of protein bioconjugates, including monoclonal antibody and peptide bioconjugation and dye conjugation, as applicable
- Characterize and evaluate bioconjugates, including physicochemical properties, stability, conjugation efficiency, and binding ability
- Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot formulation challenges and propose data-driven solutions
- Perform data and statistical analyses using Excel and GraphPad Prism
- Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely records in electronic notebooks and generate internal technical reports
Requirements
You have a BS/MS degree with 2+ years of experience in Pharmaceutics, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience in nanoparticle-based formulation development and analytical characterization
Skills
- Prior work with nucleic acid delivery systems, especially lipid-based or polymeric nanoparticles
- Experience with nucleic acid encapsulation techniques
- Experience with bioconjugate and targeted delivery
- Proficient in physicochemical and biochemical characterization techniques, including:
- Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA)
- Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC)
- UV-Vis Spectroscopy, HPLC, SDS-PAGE
- Fluorescence-based assays, protein quantification methods
- Strong data analysis and interpretation skills using GraphPad Prism, Excel, or similar tools
- Familiarity with stability testing, release profiling, and formulation optimization
- Demonstrated ability to independently design, execute, interpret, and present experimental results
- Experience in data processing, analysis, statistics, and data interpretation
Schedule
This role is based out of our Bridgewater, NJ office and requires full-time, in-person presence to support hands-on collaboration, access specialized equipment, and/or operational needs. Minimal travel expected.
