Position Details
The Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs (APFA) directs UGA’s Office of Faculty Affairs, which handles all faculty-related records and policies related to appointments, contracts, promotion, tenure, instructor credentials, and faculty activities and productivity. This role reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and works closely with the Provost, Vice President for Human Resources and Chief Human Resources Officer, Office of Legal Affairs, deans, department heads, and other administrators on faculty appointments, promotion and tenure, personnel matters, and faculty governance to ensure implementation and execution of all faculty-related policies. The role also oversees a comprehensive suite of faculty and academic leadership development programming. This individual is a key member of the Provost’s Office team and of the University Cabinet. The APFA provides leadership and contributes to the design, testing, implementation, and maintenance of institutional business practices and software systems for human capital management (HCM) that impact faculty records and contracts. The academic appointment of the appointed Associate Provost will remain unchanged.
Additional Requirements
- Currently be a tenured full professor at UGA
- Hold a terminal degree
- 2+ years’ experience as a department head, assistant/associate dean or in a similar academic administrative role
- A strong record of research, scholarly, and/or creative activity
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
- Have previous direct involvement in facilitating and leading annual evaluations, third-year reviews, post-tenure reviews, and promotion and tenure processes within a college/school at UGA
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

- Effectively train faculty and staff on complex topics
- Recruit and mentor faculty with clearly positive outcomes

- Understand, appreciate, and be able to communicate the missions of UGA and the role and importance of Faculty Affairs within that mission
Duties/Responsibilities
Serve as a member of the Provost’s leadership team, and provide counsel and advice to the Provost and Vice Provost on all faculty personnel matters
Serve as the authoritative source of UGA faculty-related policies and procedures, as they relate to UGA’s statutes and policies and BOR policy manual
Serve as the liaison between UGA and the BOR on all matters related to faculty appointment, promotion and tenure, evaluation, endowed positions, and policy implementation
Direct the overall operation of the Office of Faculty Affairs including current operations, management and development of all Office staff, recommending improvements in workflow and operations, and implementing approved changes
Work with the Provost and Vice Provost to establish and implement policies, procedures, and deadlines for processing faculty personnel actions
Disseminate information about faculty personnel policies, procedures and deadlines to academic units around campus
Work closely and effectively with deans, department heads, and other campus administrators, as necessary, in all matters related to faculty personnel including offer letters, appointment, contracts, promotion and tenure, annual evaluations, post-tenure review, and sensitive faculty personnel issues
Develop, deliver, and oversee suite of training and workshops on career and leadership development among faculty at all stages of their careers
Oversee and manage the annual promotion and tenure process and annual evaluation and post-tenure review processes at UGA, and recommend new processes and procedures to continually improve the process at UGA
Participate in faculty governance and serve on appropriate university committees
Participate in the design, testing, implementation, and maintenance of current OneUSG Connect functionality and upgrades and transition to Workday modules that impact faculty data, contracts, workflows, and business processes
Accept other projects and responsibilities as assigned by the Provost and Vice Provost
