Associate EHS Consultant - Environmental focus

About the role

This is the entry level of the EHS Consulting classification hierarchy. This position provides comprehensive environmental support to Customer Delivery and Transmission organizational sections in OH/KY/SE IN. Employees at this level solve problems in environmental areas of specialization, with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Develop and increase knowledge of the organization, procedures, and assigned customers; analyze and understand information, past practices, and business objectives to make appropriate recommendations to management or assigned customers.
• Serve as single-points-of-contact or coordinators to implement environmental activities requiring broad knowledge and experience to provide compliance solutions to EHS issues.
• Assist higher-level teammates in monitoring practices of assigned organizational areas (Environmental, Safety, and/or Health) to facilitate compliance with company and/or regulatory policies and mitigate risks.
• Provide basic regulatory-required and internal environmental reports, support assigned environmental training programs, and assist with developing and maintaining procedures and programs to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
• Assist in ensuring Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance and help track regulatory changes, legislative activities, and industry standards.
• Research, develop, and/or evaluate programs, policies, or activities within the assigned discipline; solve straightforward problems using standard procedures.
• Provide information and consultation to management or assigned customers on existing EHS programs and policies, serving as an associate expert for basic technical programs and compliance issues.
• With assistance from a Senior or above, develop and maintain procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental and safety laws and regulations.
• Support Duke Energy on various internal and external industry committees and teams.
• Develop positive working relationships with peers, customers, employees, and management to effectively complete work activities.
• With guidance, assist in working with federal, state, and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Science, or Engineering.
• In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, High School/GED AND 4 years of related work experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or Science Technology (desired).
• Master’s degree in Science (desired).
• Certified Hazardous Materials Manager and/or Qualified Environmental Professional (desired).
• Knowledge of environmental regulatory compliance requirements, scientific practices, quality assurance principles, and auditing principles.
• Demonstrated technical skills in multimedia environmental (air, water, waste).
• Effective communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills with a customer-oriented focus.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with management.
• Ability to develop and implement systems and processes that comply with environmental laws and regulations, corporate policies, and goals (with guidance).
• Experience in negotiating with regulators at the state and/or federal level (desired).
• Experience in supporting EH&S compliance at multiple facilities/regions within multiple regulatory jurisdictions (desired).

Working Conditions

• Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility. Reliable, consistent transportation is required.
• Office environment with exposure to PC terminal and keyboard.
• Outside work during all seasons.
• Occasional overtime, weekend, outage, and callout work.
• Field, work site, and facility visitation required.
• Vehicle travel involved to field locations; typical travel safety factors apply.
• Ability to safely maneuver on uneven terrain.
• Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
