About the role
The Mass General Brigham Development Office represents a team of 450+ fundraising professionals dedicated to inspiring visionary philanthropy that advances caring and curing for patients in Boston and around the world. Philanthropy enables Mass General Brigham to deliver high-quality patient care, pursue innovative research, train future healthcare leaders, and improve world-class facilities. This role manages key operational processes and staff-facing financial services within Development Finance, promoting efficient, consistent, and service-oriented practices while maintaining effective internal controls.
Responsibilities
- Financial Operations and Service Delivery
- Manage assigned areas of day-to-day financial operations to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with applicable requirements.
- Provide guidance and support to MGB Development Office staff on financial processes, requirements, and resources.
- Monitor service needs, recurring issues, and workload trends; recommend improvements to processes and service delivery.
- Serve as an escalation point for complex or unresolved financial service and operational issues; coordinate resolution and elevate matters as needed.
- Collaborate with Mass General Brigham enterprise partners to resolve operational issues, implement enterprise financial processes, and coordinate escalation.
- Policy, Compliance, and Financial Approvals
- Provide practical guidance on financial policies, procedures, documentation standards, and approval requirements to ensure consistent interpretation and application.
- Contribute to drafting and revising departmental financial policies, procedures, and guidance, incorporating operational needs and enterprise requirements.
- Coordinate the implementation of enterprise financial policies within the MGB Development Office.
- Review complex policy questions and exception requests; coordinate additional review when needed.
- Oversee financial approval processes, including advance authorizations, expense policy exceptions, and other special approval requests.
- Establish clear service expectations and identify opportunities to simplify and standardize the review and routing of approval requests.
- Monitor approval activity and recurring issues to identify opportunities for process improvement.
- Support internal reviews and documentation needs related to financial policies, approvals, and controls.
- Financial Reporting and Administration
- Develop and maintain financial reports, dashboards, and operational metrics to support budget monitoring, expense oversight, and administrative decision-making.
- Coordinate data validation and oversee reporting on sundry funds, financial approvals, policy compliance, and service delivery within Development Finance.
- Support ad hoc reporting and analysis as requested by the Senior Director of Finance.
- Identify and apply appropriate technology and reporting tools to improve reporting processes, data visualization, and access to financial information.
- Process Improvement and Systems
- Coordinate initiatives to improve the staff experience, financial processes, administrative practices, and service delivery.
- Support workflow automation, system enhancements, implementation of new tools, and standardization of financial practices across MGB Development Office entities.
- Develop and communicate practical guidance and training materials; prepare staff communications and organize resources within the Development Finance knowledge base.
- Staff Management and Team Coordination
- Manage and develop direct reports, including setting clear expectations, providing coaching and feedback, completing performance reviews, and supporting professional development.
- Coordinate workload, priorities, coverage, and cross-training to support timely and consistent service.
- Contribute to team planning and the implementation of shared priorities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 5-7 years of related experience.
Skills
- Experience managing financial or administrative processes within a complex organization.
- Demonstrated experience managing and developing staff, including supporting employee performance and professional development.
- Understanding of financial policies, approval processes, documentation requirements, compliance practices, and internal controls.
- Experience developing procedures, policy guidance, training resources, or staff communications.
- Strong organizational, analytical, systems thinking, and problem-solving skills, with close attention to accuracy and detail.
- Ability to identify and implement process improvements, support organizational change, and manage competing priorities.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial requirements clearly and build collaborative working relationships.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and handle confidential or sensitive information with discretion.
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA or other relevant advanced degree.
- Experience in healthcare, higher education, nonprofit, fundraising, or another complex, matrixed organization.
- Knowledge of expense management, procurement, contracting processes, financial reporting, and compliance requirements.
- Experience in Workday preferred.
- Experience using financial reporting and analytics systems, data visualization tools, workflow platforms, and enterprise business applications.
- Proficiency in Power BI, advanced Excel, or similar reporting tools.
Pay
The target salary for this position is $90,000 - $105,000 annually. Final offers will be based on the candidate's experience and internal equity.
