About the role

Associate Director, Content Production is equal parts creative thinker and skilled maker — someone who doesn't wait for direction, but spots a story, knows exactly how to tell it, and gets to work. This is a senior role on Code for America’s integrated Marketing & Communications team who will own the creation of high-quality, audience-first content across video, audio, and written formats, bringing the organization’s mission to life for the people we serve, the communities we work in, and the broader public.

This role will report to the Director, Strategic Communications and is expected to travel no more than 10% of the time.

Content Creation & Production

  • Conceive and produce content across multiple formats–video, written features, blog posts, case studies, reports, and podcast-style audio–often moving from idea to finished product with limited direction.
  • Write and edit compelling, audience-first copy that adapts in tone and depth across channels without losing the thread of our brand voice.
  • Sell, shoot, edit, and deliver video content end-to-end, including graphics, captions, and platform-ready formatting.
  • Produce and edit audio content, including interviews, short-form storytelling, and episodic formats.
  • Manage and direct vendors as needed.
  • Hold a high creative bar across everything you make, and model that standard for others on the team.

Content Strategy & Audience Building

  • Own and drive content strategy for key functional areas, translating organizational priorities into content plans that build audiences over time, not just inform them.
  • Champion a consistent pipeline of fresh ideas, new formats, unexpected angles, and emerging platforms — make the case for experimentation and create conditions for the team to try new things.
  • Identify timely hooks and opportunities to extend, repurpose, or reimagine existing content in ways that earn new attention.
  • Lead content calendar planning with ideas that are timely, mission-connected, and genuinely interesting to the people we want to reach.
  • Use performance data to continuously sharpen content and distribution decisions, and advocate for strategic improvements based on what you learn.
  • Anticipate shifts in audience behavior, platform dynamics, or organizational priorities and proactively adapt the content approach.

Channel Management & Publishing

  • Oversee content publishing across web, blog, and email ensuring the calendar runs smoothly and stakeholders are aligned.
  • In collaboration with Marketing, build and send email campaigns, including copy, audience segmentation, and platform setup.
  • Ensure all content meets standards for brand voice, visual consistency, and accessibility — and establish or improve the processes that make this consistent at scale.

Cross Team Collaboration & Influence

  • Partner closely with colleagues across MarComms, Philanthropy, Delivery, and Product to surface stories and translate complex work into content people want to engage with.
  • Interview staff, partners, and subject-matter experts to gather raw material for stories and campaigns.
  • Lead content projects end-to-end, including timelines, reviews, and approvals - resolving dependencies and keeping work moving across teams.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to cross-functional stakeholders, helping them understand content tradeoffs and make smarter decisions.
  • Partner with other content creators on the team to establish quality standards and workflows.

Other duties as assigned

  • Includes contributing to annual planning, triannual reviews, OKRs, NCTs, and board reports as needed.

About you

  • The position is a perfect fit for a senior-level multimedia storyteller who operates with a high degree of autonomy, sets the standard for independent execution, and has the range to move fluidly between video, audio, and written formats while always keeping the audience in mind. At this level, we're looking for someone who not only produces exceptional content but contributes to content strategy, mentors others, and proactively drives how the team works.
  • 8 + years of experience in content creation, digital media, journalism, marketing communications, or a related field, with a portfolio demonstrating range across formats and evidence of strategic ownership.
  • Operates with a high degree of autonomy — moves from concept to published product with minimal direction and sets the pace and quality standard for the team.
  • Strong video production skills, including shooting, editing, and post-production; proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Premiere Pro or After Effects, is required.
  • Demonstrated experience producing or editing podcast or audio content.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to make complicated ideas feel simple without losing nuance, and to shift voice to fit the audience and channel.
  • Proficiency with CMS platforms, particularly WordPress.
  • Strategically uses AI content tools to accelerate production, improve team workflows, and champion new approaches — without sacrificing quality or authenticity.
  • A track record of growing audiences and using performance data to drive strategic decisions, not just report on them.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple deadlines and stakeholders with confidence; experienced in navigating shifting priorities and helping others do the same.
  • In collaboration with functional areas, translates organizational priorities into content plans.
  • Experience mentoring junior team members and cross-functional peers, establishing quality standards, workflows, or patterns that others can follow and build on.
  • Curiosity about emerging AI tools and a commitment to using them ethically and effectively.
  • A deep commitment to Code for America's mission of making government services work well for the people who need them most.
