Position Summary
The Associate Dean for Medical Education will manage the medical education program curriculum, collaborate with faculty, and ensure the restructured curriculum provides the best learning opportunities for medical students. They will also support and evaluate the clinical years of the program, track curriculum delivery, and ensure compliance with LCME accreditation requirements.
Educational Responsibilities
- Manage the medical education program curriculum
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean for UME (Phoenix campus)
- Develop and implement modifications to the current curriculum
- Ensure the restructured curriculum is developed, employed, and modified
- Work closely with all faculty and staff in the Office of Medical Education
- Ensure the curriculum is developed, employed, and modified to provide the best learning opportunities for the medical students
Evaluation Responsibilities
- Ensure student evaluation data is used to refine, assess, and continually improve all aspects of medical student education
- Develop a competency-based assessment system
- Implement policies and procedures supporting best practices for student assessment
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs to train faculty in assessment methods
- Manage conflicts of interest in student assessment systems
Accreditation and Quality Improvement
- Participate in activities necessary to maintain LCME accreditation
- Participate in the quality improvement programs of the Office of Accreditation and Quality Improvement
- Develop a comprehensive plan for program, phase, and course evaluation
- Facilitate programmatic improvements as indicated
- Communicate programmatic evaluation and strategic priorities for improvement annually
- Lead curriculum improvement efforts involving key stakeholders
- Ensure compliance with all accreditation processes and standards regarding curriculum, assessment, and programmatic evaluation
- Avoid involvement in LCME documentation and site visit preparation efforts, overseeing staff efforts where applicable
Admissions and Student Affairs
- Works with the Office of Admissions and Office of Student Affairs to identify, recruit, and admit an academically strong, diverse class
- Works with the Office of Student Affairs to develop and maintain high quality career development, support, and educational enhancement programs
- Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs to address student concerns regarding assessment and processing grade disputes
- Collaborates with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and the Education Program Committee to identify and support students' concerns, communicate committee findings, and track associated outcomes
Research Development
- Works with the Office of Research to help identify research opportunities for learners and streamline processes for research development
Faculty Development
- Works with the Office of Faculty Affairs to ensure a wide array of high-quality mechanisms are available to enhance faculty members' career development, especially in the areas of teaching and educational scholarship
- Supports faculty development initiatives
Administrative Responsibilities
- Provide direction, support, and evaluation for OME leadership, directors, assistant deans, and staff who participate in the many phases of medical student education
- Oversee the Office of Medical Education, collaborating with the Director of Medical Education to recruit, hire, train, and allocate staff efforts across programs
- Plan and manage the overall curricular budget to accomplish strategic priorities and maintain fiscal responsibility
Equity and Inclusion
- Ensure a medical curriculum that teaches about and promotes the care of diverse patients and advocates for equity in healthcare
- Ensure that any issues or complaints related to diversity, equity, and inclusion are managed promptly, thoroughly, and conscientiously
