About the Role

As an Associate Attorney focused on coverage litigation, you will handle a diverse portfolio of insurance coverage matters from inception through resolution. You will play a key role in advising insurer clients, drafting coverage opinions, and litigating complex coverage disputes in New York courts. Your work will directly support the firm's strategic growth in insurance coverage and deepen client relationships through high-quality, timely legal service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of insurance coverage litigation matters, including pleadings, motion practice, discovery, and trial preparation.
  • Draft and analyze coverage opinions, position letters, and related correspondence for insurer clients.
  • Conduct legal research on coverage issues, policy interpretation, and relevant statutory and case law.
  • Represent clients in court appearances, conferences, mediations, and arbitrations as required.
  • Take and defend depositions of parties, witnesses, and experts in coverage-related disputes.
  • Collaborate with partners and senior attorneys on case strategy, risk assessment, and litigation tactics.
  • Maintain organized case files and meet minimum billable hour expectations of 1,800 annually.

Key Requirements

  • Admission to the New York State Bar and in good standing.
  • 2-5 years of experience in insurance coverage litigation, preferably representing insurers.
  • Demonstrated experience handling coverage disputes from pleadings through discovery and motion practice.
  • Strong drafting skills for coverage opinions, motions, and substantive legal memoranda.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines in a fast-paced practice.
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills, with confidence in court and client-facing settings.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with complex commercial insurance policies (e.g., CGL, professional liability, D&O, property).
  • Background in both first-party and third-party coverage matters.
  • Familiarity with alternative dispute resolution in coverage disputes.
  • Prior experience in a mid-size or large law firm insurance coverage group.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the New York State Bar (required).
  • Additional admissions (federal courts or other states) are a plus.
