Assoc Applications Dev Engineer

ServiceNow · Santa Clara, CA · 6 days ago
HybridEngineering$109k–$140k/yrFull-time

It all started when engineer Fred Luddy wrote code that automated a tedious task for his coworker, Phyllis. She cried tears of joy. That moment inspired Fred to build a company that could do that for everyone—freeing people from busywork so they could focus on meaningful work. Today, ServiceNow is the AI control tower for business reinvention. Our ServiceNow AI platform brings together any AI, any data, and any workflow—helping 85% of the Fortune 500® work smarter, faster, and better.

About the role

We are the Industry Vertical Engineering team at ServiceNow. We design and build specialized software solutions tailored to the unique workflows, data models, and compliance needs of specific sectors, including high-tech, telecommunications, healthcare, financial services, and manufacturing. We are building the next generation of industry-specific enterprise applications, and increasingly these applications are AI-native: their core behavior is model-driven rather than explicitly authored. They interpret user intent, reason over context, invoke tools, and act on the user's behalf, all while respecting the complex business workflows and specialized data models of the industries we serve.

Responsibilities

  • Complete guided bug fixes, simple feature enhancements, and test writing across front-end (React/Angular/Vue, HTML5/CSS3) and back-end (REST/GraphQL APIs, business logic) layers, following established team conventions.
  • Contribute to features that incorporate AI-native behavior — such as agentic workflows and conversational experiences — under the direction of senior engineers, developing a working understanding of how these systems are designed and tested.
  • Write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests for your work; participate in code review as an author; and adhere to coding standards, linting rules, and documentation practices.
  • Begin using AI coding assistants (such as GitHub Copilot or Cursor) under supervision to accelerate implementation, learning to critically evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability rather than accepting it at face value.
  • Learn to work within CI/CD pipelines, participate in deployments, and develop awareness of how code ships reliably and operates in production.
  • Raise blockers promptly, ask questions freely, and communicate progress clearly to your tech lead and teammates in sprint ceremonies and check-ins.
  • Partner with product managers, designers, and senior engineers to understand requirements and translate them into working, well-tested software.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 0–2 years of professional software engineering experience, or a strong academic background with relevant internship or project work.
  • Foundational knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented programming; beginning-level proficiency in at least one modern language and framework.
  • Exposure to front-end development (HTML/CSS, JavaScript, and a framework such as React, Angular, or Vue) and back-end concepts (REST APIs, databases).
  • Basic familiarity with version control (Git), cloud application concepts, and software quality assurance practices including unit testing.
  • Curiosity about AI-native application development — how agents work, how prompts are engineered, and how non-deterministic systems are tested — with a genuine desire to grow in this area.
  • Experience in leveraging or critically thinking about how to integrate AI into work processes, decision-making, or problem-solving. This may include using AI-powered tools, automating workflows, analyzing AI-driven insights, or exploring AI's potential impact on the function or industry.
  • Ability to follow established team conventions, raise blockers promptly, and work within a structured, guided engineering environment.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative, learning-first mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to LLM APIs, prompt engineering, or agent frameworks through coursework, personal projects, or internships.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerization basics (Docker), or cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Interest in regulated industry domains such as high-tech, telecommunications, healthcare, financial services, or manufacturing.
  • ServiceNow platform experience or familiarity with enterprise SaaS applications.

Pay

For positions in this location, we offer a base pay of $108,800 - $140,000, plus equity (when applicable), variable/incentive compensation and benefits. Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. Please note that the base pay shown is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location.

Benefits

  • Health plans, including flexible spending accounts.
  • 401(k) Plan with company match.
  • ESPP (Employee Stock Purchase Plan).
  • Matching donations.
  • Flexible time away plan and family leave programs.
