About the role

The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia seeks to hire Assistant United States Attorneys to help enforce Federal criminal and civil laws that protect life, liberty and the property of citizens. The district consists of multiple federal agencies, military installations, and major airports, and the Office has over 100 criminal AUSAs handling a variety of complex cases.

Duties

• Prosecute criminal cases
• Litigate civil cases
• Handle a wide variety of complex cases including drug trafficking, money laundering, terrorism, firearms offenses, cybercrimes, environmental crimes, and fraud

Requirements

• Must be a United States Citizen or National
• Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication
• Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
• Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable
• Must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction)
• Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof

Qualifications

• Required: J.D. Degree, active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction)
• Preferred: Experience litigating criminal cases in the federal courts, federal judicial clerkship, or equivalent experience litigating in state courts as a prosecutor

Salary

Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $65,563 to $171,487, which will include the following locality pay based on the location selection listed below:

• Alexandria, VA: 33.94%
• Norfolk, VA: 18.80%
• Newport News, VA: 18.80%
• Richmond, VA: 22.28%
