About the role

The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Alaska is a vibrant and energetic office in the most majestic state in the country. The USAO has offices in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. There are currently 22 Assistant United States Attorneys who prosecute federal crimes and defend and pursue the interests of the United States in civil cases. This employment opportunity is in the Civil Division of our Anchorage office.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the federal government, its agencies and employees in civil litigation in the District.
  • Primary areas of practice include tort cases, such as medical malpractice and personal injury, and Title VII cases alleging discrimination in hiring and employment practices by agencies of the United States.
  • Engage in various areas of civil practice, including civil rights, immigration, bankruptcy, debts owed to the United States or its agencies, judicial review of administrative findings, and injunctive proceedings.
  • Take depositions, prepare and answer interrogatories, negotiate settlements, engage in motion practice, try cases, and write and argue appeals.
  • Assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.
  • Selective Service: If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law. See www.sss.gov.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

  • Required Qualifications:
  • Excellent academic credentials, a J.D. degree, an active membership in good standing of the bar of any jurisdiction, minimum one (1) year post-J.D. experience, superior analytical abilities and oral communications skills, excellent research and writing skills, good judgment and strong character. Mentoring and training will be provided.
  • United States citizenship is required.

Additional information

  • Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $80,000 to $197,100 which includes 32.36% locality pay. In addition there is a non-taxable cost of living allowance where authorized.
