About the role
The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California seeks experienced attorneys to serve as Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Civil Division. You will represent the United States and federal agencies in various civil cases, including employment, tort, constitutional, civil rights, FOIA, Administrative Procedure Act, False Claims Act, and financial litigation.
Responsibilities
- Work with government agencies to gather information and evidence.
- Conduct civil investigations of claims of violations of federal law.
- Engage in motion practice and oral argument.
- Take and defend depositions.
- Prepare and respond to written discovery.
- Negotiate settlements and prepare cases for trial.
- Try cases and brief and argue appeals.
Requirements
- Must be a United States Citizen or National.
- Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing.
- Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
- Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof.
- Must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
Qualifications
- At least three (3) years of experience as a licensed attorney (or post-law school graduation judicial clerkships) preparing for, participating in, and/or reviewing formal hearings or trials involving litigation at the federal, state, or local court level.
- Strong academics, outstanding organizational skills, superior legal writing and research ability, demonstrated analytical ability, good judgment and courtroom skills, and a commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, justice, and public service.
- Substantially self-sufficient in engaging in day-to-day responsibilities and have a strong ability to analyze complex legal and factual issues, make strategic decisions, write clearly and persuasively, and exercise fair and sound judgment.
- Strong work ethic, ability to work independently and in a team setting, and judgment, skill, and strength of character necessary to succeed as lead counsel in fast-paced litigation.

Pay
Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $103,085 to $197,100 which includes 46.34% locality pay.
