Assistant United States Attorney (CIVIL)

About the role

The United States Attorney for the District of Utah is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes, defending the United States, its agencies, officers, and employees in civil actions, enforcing regulatory authority of federal agencies, and recovering funds from individuals who violate criminal, civil, and regulatory laws. The Office is divided into four divisions: the Administrative Division, Appellate Division, Civil Division, and Criminal Division.

Responsibilities

• Advise federal law enforcement agents on civil investigations
• Present criminal cases to the grand jury
• Prepare and argue a broad range of motions
• Try civil cases before the United States District Court

Requirements

• Residency Requirement: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.
• Selective Service: If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law. See www.sss.gov.
• Education: Must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction).
• Experience: At least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. Ideal qualifications include at least 5 or more years of post-J.D. litigation experience.
• Qualifications: Demonstrated quick analytical ability, superior oral advocacy and writing skills, strong research skills, interpersonal skills, good judgment, excellent communication and courtroom skills, and the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and agencies.

• Demonstrated capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment.
• Must be a United States Citizen or National.
• Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
• Must be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) by entry on duty date.

Pay

Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $65,563 to $171,487 plus locality pay where authorized.
