Assistant United States Attorney (Civil)

About the role

The Northern District of Alabama is currently seeking one attorney for a permanent Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in our Civil Division. This position is located in the main office in Birmingham.

Responsibilities

• Represent the United States, its agencies, and employees predominantly in civil litigation brought by or against the government.
• Handle a variety of cases including: actions under the Federal Tort Claims Act (premises liability, vehicle accidents, medical malpractice, etc.), constitutional tort claims against federal employees, general employment litigation, and litigation filed by federal prisoners and immigration detainees.
• Pursue affirmative claims on behalf of the government.
• Assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

• Must be a United States Citizen or National.
• Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication.
• Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
• Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
• Must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) by their entry on duty date.
• Law school graduates and current law students taking a July 2026 bar examination may be considered, subject to the foregoing requirements.
• Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information.

Qualifications

• Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree by Enter on Duty (EOD) date.
• Additional information: Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $ 77,522 to $197,100 which includes 18.24% locality pay.

Schedule

1 to 5 nights of travel required per month.
