Assistant United States Attorney

Duties

The U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Utah seeks an experienced attorney to fill an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in the Criminal Division of its Salt Lake City office. Responsibilities include advising federal law enforcement agents on criminal investigations, presenting criminal cases to the grand jury, preparing and arguing a broad range of motions, and trying criminal cases before the United States District Court. Applicants should be capable of handling a variety of significant and complex criminal prosecutions, including securities fraud, financial crime, violent crime, narcotics, and national security.

Requirements

• Must be a United States Citizen or National.
• Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing.
• Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
• Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
• Must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) by their entry on duty date. Law school graduates and current law students taking a July 2026 bar examination may be considered, subject to the foregoing requirements.
• Must demonstrate a quick analytical ability and the facility to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case.
• Must demonstrate superior oral advocacy and writing skills as well as strong research skills, interpersonal skills, and good judgment.
• Must possess excellent communication and courtroom skills and exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and agencies.
• Must have a demonstrative capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment.
• Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information.

Pay

• Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $65,563 to $171,487 plus locality pay where authorized.
