Assistant United States Attorney
Responsibilities
AUSAs in the Criminal Division advise federal law enforcement agents on criminal investigations, present criminal cases to the grand jury, prepare and argue a broad range of motions, and try criminal cases before the United States District Court.
The ideal candidate should have at least 5 or more years of post-J.D. litigation experience, including handling significant and complex criminal prosecutions such as securities fraud, financial crime, violent crime, narcotics, and national security cases.
Requirements
Conditions of employment include:
- An initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing.
- Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- Applicants must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.
- Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
- Must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) by their entry on duty date.
Qualifications
Qualifications include:
- A J.D. degree and active membership in the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction).
- At least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience.
- A demonstrative capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment.
- A quick analytical ability and the facility to articulate critical issues in a case.
- Superior oral advocacy and writing skills, strong research skills, interpersonal skills, and good judgment.
- Excellent communication and courtroom skills, and the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with others.
Education
Applicants must possess a J.D. degree.
