About the role

The United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Eastern District of New York (EDNY or the Office) is seeking experienced attorneys to serve as Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) in the Office's Civil or Criminal Division. Positions are located in Brooklyn, New York and Central Islip, New York.

Responsibilities

  • Criminal Division: Prosecute a wide range of federal crimes including cartels, transnational criminal organizations, violent crime, firearms violations, corporate fraud, counterterrorism, cybercrime, human trafficking, public corruption, immigration, and asset forfeiture.
  • Criminal Division - Appeals Section: Research, write, and edit appellate briefs, assist in oral arguments, and provide real-time trial assistance.
  • Criminal Division - Asset Recovery Section: Manage all aspects of asset forfeiture, including investigations, seizures, pleadings, motions, and trials.
  • Civil Division: Represent the United States in civil actions in federal courts, including affirmative and defensive cases in areas like civil rights, drug diversion, health care fraud, and immigration.

Requirements

  • J.D. degree and active bar membership (any U.S. jurisdiction).
  • At least 1 year post-J.D. legal or relevant experience.
  • Reside in the district or within 20 miles.

Pay

Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based on years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay for AD 21 to AD 29 is $87,133 to $195,200, including locality pay of 37.95%.

May require travel, both within and outside the district, as needed.

Type of Position

All initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on a 14 month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
