Assistant United States Attorney (Appellate Division)

Duties

The U.S. Attorney's Office seeks to fill an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in the Appellate Division. The Appellate Division represents the U.S. Attorney's Office in criminal matters before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. As an AUSA in the Appellate Division, you will:

• Research and write appellate briefs and post-conviction responses.
• Present oral arguments on complex and novel legal issues.
• Represent the U.S. Government in cases involving immigration, national security, and public safety.
• Provide real-time trial assistance to AUSAs as needed.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Employment Conditions

• Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing.
• Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
• You must be a United States citizen and reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof.
• Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.

Qualifications

• A J.D. Degree (or equivalent) and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction).
• Quick analytical ability to articulate critical issues in a case.
• Superior oral and writing skills, strong research and interpersonal skills, and good judgment.
• Excellent communication and courtroom skills, and ability to work professionally with others.

Education

Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree.

Salary Information

• Baumgarten, Beaumont, and Tyler, Texas: Salary is $76,748 to $173,485 which includes 17.06% locality pay.
• Plano and Sherman, Texas: Salary is $83,435 to $188,602 which includes 27.26% locality pay.
