Assistant Teacher - Child Development - Secondary

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

The Assistant Teacher-Child Development Center (2nd) under the supervision of the Teacher-Child Development Center, provides instructional, clerical, and non-instructional support in the Child Development Center classroom. This includes implementing a developmentally appropriate curriculum that aligns with the program's educational and philosophical goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Adheres to the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct, demonstrating a professional attitude and work ethic, and respect for children, families, and colleagues.
  • Ensures a safe, healthy environment for children, focusing on classroom health, hygiene, nutrition, and safety. This involves maintaining a clean and orderly environment, ensuring children attend to personal hygiene/hand washing, teaching children about health and nutrition, and reporting accidents, injuries, and illnesses to parents and supervisors.
  • Assists the teacher and primary Assistant Teacher-CDC in developing and implementing an environment and curriculum that promotes various developmental activities in language and literacy, cognition, social-emotional well-being, and physical health. Meets with teachers to discuss and consider the Center’s goals, educational philosophy, and general curriculum plans.
  • Ensures children’s safety through constant supervision, storage of dangerous materials, and proper classroom and equipment maintenance.
  • Works with other teaching staff to create a nurturing, stimulating, non-punitive, and culturally sensitive environment that encourages language, self-expression, exploration, creativity, imaginative play, thinking skills, and positive relationships.
  • Participates in any quality enhancement initiatives the center undertakes.
  • Attends staff meetings, planning sessions, and professional development opportunities, sharing information gained from coursework or professional development workshops and conferences.
  • Maintains compliance with requirements set by funding, licensing, and accreditation agencies.
  • Performs other duties as required and maintains the classroom atmosphere and requirements in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Complies with CCC Customer Service Excellence standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of credit from an accredited college or university, with 9 semester hours or 12 quarter hours in courses directly related to Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or a related field from birth to age six (6).
  • A minimum of one year of work experience working with young children birth to 5 years required. Candidate must be registered with Illinois Gateways to Opportunity and actively pursuing their Level 4 credential in Infant/Toddler (IT) or Early Childhood Education (ECE).
  • Must have and maintain a warm, supportive attitude towards children, flexibility in accepting assignments and adapting to changes in the program, willingness to accept supervision and continuous professional development, ability to communicate verbally and in writing with children, parents, and other staff members, and the ability to assist in creating and implementing developmentally appropriate lessons, interact positively with children and other staff, and understand and attend to the physical, social, cognitive, health, and safety, and emotional needs of the children.
  • Ability to work well within a culturally diverse environment with the ability to handle situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Must be able to operate computers and use applicable software.

SALARY RANGE

$46,942 - $51,636.20

Offered salary will be determined by the respective collective bargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
