About the role

The Assistant Teacher works in an early childhood classroom with children ranging in age from six weeks through five years. The position involves a collaborative effort supporting classroom functions under the supervision of a Head Teacher and an Associate Teacher. Responsibilities include supporting daily activities and programming, interacting with and supervising children, maintaining daily communication with families, and supervising University students.

Assistant Teachers are required to complete 12 hours of professional development annually and attend all five professional development days at UCDC. They must maintain all DHS, NAEYC, and Keystone STARS requirements.

Responsibilities

• Supports the Head Teacher in planning and implementing a child development program for a class of children.
• May act as supervisor when the Head Teacher and Associate Teacher are not in the classroom.
• Prepares fine and gross motor activities for effective child development.
• Maintains a safe classroom conducive to learning and engagement.
• Guides student and temporary workers.

Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED.
• Two years of verified experience with young children OR 15 credits in a human service field and one year of verified experience with young children.
• Must obtain and maintain all PA Act 153 clearances and background checks (PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance).

Physical Effort

• Occasional and sustained performance of heavier physical tasks, including traversing rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, moving quickly, and lifting/carrying 40-pound children.
• Exposure to outdoor elements and potential non-disabling injuries or illnesses.
• Potential exposure to bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM (varied shifts).
