Assistant Teacher Job Description
Job Summary
The Assistant Teacher: Provides a nurturing and safe environment for all children in the classroom.
Assists in the planning and implementation of the daily curriculum.
Assists in the coordination of the children’s personal care, hygiene, learning activities, specialized programs, and positive guidance.
Assists in the maintenance of classroom records and developmental checklist.
Informs parents of their children’s progress on a daily basis.
Follows the direction of the Lead Teacher.
Keeps the Director informed on a timely basis of pertinent issues regarding staff, children, families, and the program.
Performs other duties as directed by the Director.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists in implementing curriculum activities and lesson plans.
- Follows program schedule for the classroom, outdoor time, meals, snacks, and special activities.
- Uses positive guidance techniques consistent with state licensing regulations; counsels children when social, academic, or adjustment problems arise.
- Keeps accurate and current records of each child’s developmental milestones, student accidents, anecdotal notes, and attendance.
- Under the direction of the lead teacher, helps to establish developmentally appropriate room arrangement, décor, and learning environment in the classroom, consistent with the program’s philosophy and goals.
Interactions with Parents, Staff, and Director
- Interacts professionally with current and prospective families.
- Maintains appropriate primary caregiver groups.
- Observes, records, and reports to the Lead Teacher any needed repairs to the building, play area, equipment, or toys throughout the facility.
Health and Safety
- Implements appropriate emergency procedures in the event of a fire, tornado, chemical leak, or other emergencies.
- Administers CPR/First aid or other appropriate emergency procedures in serious student accidents or emergencies.
- Properly maintains educational materials and equipment, ensures that children are appropriately using the equipment.
Qualifications
- A caring individual who enjoys teaching young children.
- Must meet or exceed state licensing requirements for age, education, and experience.
- Complete professional development and training hours as designed by the state childcare authority.
- Meet annual professional development requirements per state regulations with a minimum of 24 hours of training.
- Able to pass a drug screen and background check.
- Must be able to repeatedly bend, stoop and run.
- Must repeatedly lift and carry children.
- Ability to effectively interact and communicate with children and parents.
- Ability to work an eight-hour shift between 6:30 AM and 6:30 PM.
- Has reliable transportation to the childcare center.
Pay Range
$12 - $13 per hour
