About the role
The New York Public Library seeks an Assistant Security Supervisor to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for Library users and employees. This role involves responding to emergencies, performing security duties, documenting incidents, and serving as a relief for the Security Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Enforce NYPL’s rules of conduct for all patrons and visitors
- Periodically tour the building and grounds to ensure security
- Identify and question unauthorized persons, requesting assistance from security or police if necessary
- Ensure adherence to security rules by staff and visitors
- Provide security presence during special events
- Write comprehensive incident reports for investigations
- Report unusual conditions or malfunctions in building systems to facilities services
- Utilize security cameras as part of the security strategy
- Fill in for the Security Supervisor when needed
Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in related field or 2+ years of additional related experience
- Valid New York State Security Guard License
- 4+ years of prior security, military service, or law enforcement experience
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with staff and public
- Ability to work at any assigned post
- Pass physical examination
- Demonstrated knowledge of security systems and rules and regulations
- Knowledge of CCTV, card access, and access control systems

- Develop a personalized leadership style to enhance performance of assigned guards
- Develop strong relationships with staff, patrons, and first responder community
